My name is Nick and I have wanted a small backyard flock for a while now. I finally convinced the wife to allow this little venture to go forth. I am looking to build a cheap coop and get some 2-3 hens. I work at a warehouse and have access to some pallets. I have seen some simple designs and think that I can make it work.

We are planning to get the chickens in the Fall. It seems like chicks are big in the Spring, but can you get them in the Fall, or will we have to get older hens?

Any help/advice would be appreciated.

Hello :frow and Welcome To BYC! You can find chicks in the fall, it is just easier in the spring, you might want to check out your state thread and see if you can find someone who has a hatch planned when you will want chicks, or will even do a custom hatch for you. https://www.backyardchickens.com/t/160883/louisiana-la-yers-peeps or if you are willing to ship chicks, quite a few large hatcheries will ship chicks well into fall.
There are quite a few threads on building pallet coops if you do a search, ie https://www.backyardchickens.com/t/550804/pallet-chicken-coop-ideas also be sure to check out the Coops section for ideas
Another great place to check out is the Learning Center, all kinds of good articles on all aspects of poultry keeping https://www.backyardchickens.com/atype/1/Learning_Center

Welcome to BYC!

Yes, is possible to find chicks in the fall, but maybe a bit more difficult. Kelsie has really left you with some great links to follow, especially your state thread to connect with others in your area. Maybe you can find someone in your area that will be hatching chicks or have some started pullets come fall.

Lots of members have built pallet coops with great success here on BYC! So follow that link to our coop section for lots of great ideas.

Enjoy this new journey you are on and make yourself at home here on BYC. Welcome to our flock!
