Those are slate legs, which are normal for solid black chickens.

I know, I am not great at genetics and am wondering how 2 breeds both with yellow legs could produce slate legs...is it possible?

oh...the orphington had slate legs, i am guessing he is the dad

No. Lavender x buff would give black chicks with large buff patches (one could even say buff with patches of black).

She told me that she'd separated them by breed 3-4 weeks before collecting eggs to hatch. Lavender Orpington with the Buff hens, BLRW with the SLW hens.

The adults in the run are very curious about the babies but I made sure that they can retreat well away from any possible pecking.

I might pull some of the battered tarp/plastic off the coop that came with them, which needs repair anyway, and make a second layer of weatherproofing over the windward end of the dog kennel since it's supposed to be rainy overnight.
