Yiannisk, congrats on the first 4 turkey to hatch. Hope the others come along soon.

hollymh, so sorry you have to move and sell your babies after they hatch. Is there any way you will be able to keep a couple at least?

shardean, hate to hear you lost chickens to coyote. We have them here and I am so scared they will get my chicks. Do they come out during the day and attack? I haven't seen any during the day but boy do I hear them at night.

no :( We're moving in with our parents until we find a house and they said no chickens. I dont even get to bring my cats, we're having to foster them somewhere until we can get a house.

They got them at 9:30 AM! The chickens are locked up every night! I had not seen any coyotes around here! Sometimes I would hear them! So now I wait until the afternoon to let them out. When my boyfriend gets back...next week, he will build a run to keep them safe! And I need another coop for when I get Silkies!

Shardean,
Coyotes at 9:30 am is scary, I thought they prowled at night only. I have four, 13 week old Silkies ( & 20 -2 wk. olds in the brooder)and I only let them out in a fully enclosed portable run unless I am working on their coop and run. I'm trying to finish it so they will be safe from 4 legged and flying predators. If I am outside they follow me everywhere along with their 2 little d'Uccle friends. I think I will be able to relax a bit once the run is completely covered. The coop is secure and I lock them up at night. You are going to love Silkies - besides being adorable, they are the sweetest little things. Even my little roo loves to be carried around and petted.

I know! With people around too! They are so bold! I won't get silkies until I have a safe place for them! Where did you get your silkies? And we will build a run for all the chickens! I can't take this..just went out to give chickens scrap food and 2 were missing, one is my boyfriends fav...I was so upset! Luckily they were just cruzen at the neighbors! So all is well! But the stress!

My boyfriend got me a "varmint rifle" and I have been target shooting. I have never killed anything, but I think I could shoot a coyote if it is attacking my chickens. Hope this never occurs. I had a bad scare Sunday afternoon. I had my little flock free ranging while I was painting the coop and runs. After 6 hours of this I ran inside to take a quick shower to cool down. When I returned outside my two beautiful Silkie girls were missing. We checked everywhere on our 15 acres. This seemed odd because none of my chickens leave the area right around the house and their coop. We never found feathers or anything that suggest predation. I was so upset all night and couldn't forgive myself for leaving them loose for even 20 mins.. At 6 am I was back in the coop and put all the chicks in their runs. As I was cleaning inside, I went to get a new bale of shavings when I saw some white feathers. There were my girls, on top of one another stuffed behind the shavings bags. I was so relieved and happy!!! Something must have scared them and they got stuck when they went inside to hide. They were fine, just hungry and thirsty. Never made a sound as I was searching for them the night before or in the morning. Silly girls, they couldn't figure how to turn around and come out the way they went in. Beautiful girls, just not too bright. LOL

Sorry, I forgot to answer your question. My Silkies have come from a local breeder and I bought some from a hatchery. I started with 25 day olds and ended up selling all but the four that are now 13 weeks old. They are beautiful birds with lovely feathering and nice full crests. The poor girls can't see a thing with their full crests covering their eyes and so they enjoy spending time being held and carried around. They really do need a safe environment as they don't see well enough to flee from danger. Of the 20 babies I have right now, I will keep watching them and only keep the nicest quality ones as I want to breed and want to be as close to the standard as possible. Good luck with your search for Silkies. You will love them!
