Hey everyone, I'm new to raising chickens. I have a chick that hatched completely on its own this morning. I left it in the incubator to go run errands and when I came back I noticed that both of its legs are broken at the knee and the bones were popped out of the skin. I did my best to put them both back in place and I put splints on them with q-tips and band AIDS. Is there anything else I can do? How long do I leave the splints on? If you've dealt with this, whats the outcome for the chick? Thanks!

How on earth to you expect that happened? Here are some chick chairs. If you rig one up for your chick, you can probably get the legs to heal faster without weight on them. The chair also makes it easier for the chick to eat. Healing shouldn't take but a week or less, since a chick's cells are in overdrive.

@Eggcessive says, "I would only leave the chick in there for a few hours at a time. They can struggle to get out, and can get hurt, so keep an eye on them. Place food and water close enough to reach. "

This is the inside of the incubator. It's a magicfly brand. The holes in the mesh are big enough for her toes to get in but not to get stuck. That's the only thing I think could have maybe happened. She was really struggling to stand up not long after she hatched. Her hips are moving fine. She just can't stand up and move her feet. It looks like the joints at each knee are protruding out of her skin. I put everything back in place as best as I could and I splinted them with band AIDS and q-tips. She definitely doesn't like this position. I don't know what else I can do to make her comfortable and help her heal if that's even possible.

A little bit but I wasn't sure that what this is bc her joints are popped out of the skin.

I think you are dealing with splay leg and since the legs are soo thin/boney at the age it might just look like her knee joints are popped out.

What do you think about unwrapping her and getting new pictures?
