New Brahma Group: Blue Partridge x Partridge, Plus Dark

Bash, Bonnie and Brandy are now 7 years old. I can't even imagine him being that old. He is the sweetest rooster I have ever had and you know I've had some of the best tempered roosters ever known to man. He spends a lot of time sitting now, showing his age, I guess. Brandy lays almost every day right now, a super jumbo size. Bonnie was until she molted and Cora hasn't produced an egg in quite awhile-she's a year younger.

Happy birthday to them. In some crazy coincidence today I was looking back at the older days of this thread, admiring their beauty. Hope you have many more wonderful moments with them

Brandy is laying almost every day now. Bonnie is molting. Cora is doing nothing, no eggs, and she seems to be acting older. My sweet baby today-I snapped a screenshot from my latest video for the thumbnail and here he is, getting to be a very old man for a Brahma.

EMERGENCY ALERT I have a Brahma hen with a wing mostly detached/ripped off and it's been that way for a day or two because the wound is dry now, no idea what happened. Dressed the wound and wrapped to her body and she's in the hospital cage. One of Bash's hens, Bonnie. You cant see what's under all that fluff and I saw zero blood anywhere so no clue something was wrong until I touched her back and thought she had a lump of poop dried under her feathers, then saw the gaping wound. She is one that never wants you to touch her and she acted normal other than going to the roost earlier than usual, but that's been for the past two weeks and I can't see that being in the state it was in for that long.
I saturated in the wound with Vetericyn and then packed it with triple antibiotic ointment, wrapped it to her body, gave her 2 baby aspirin and Duramycin in her water. I can't believe Bash did this. He's not usually that aggressive with breeding unless she got caught on something and ripped her wing almost off. @1muttsfan any advice? Did I do right? I probably should take her to the vet, never did that before. I'm afraid they'd want to amputate the wing of a 7 year old hen and she wouldn't live through it.

I had a hen early this spring that literally got gloved by my roo (he's a big boy) his foot slipped into her her side I cleaned her up, and caked neosporin in the wound and separated her, I cleaned and caked every day for 2 weeks and she was all healed up. I rehomed her after that because she was just to small for my boy and I didn't want it to happen again. I hope your lady makes it through! I'm sure Bash didn't do it in purpose. :hugs

Thank you. I know chickens have amazing healing abilities. I've had to stitch up a couple of hens who were with my big Blue Orp rooster and those wounds were packed with dirt, This was cleaner, but it was already dried out. It wasn't feasible to stitch it up so I hope it heals. I'm not sure Bash did it, but who knows? Accidents happen no matter how vigilant we are.

Dress it at least once daily, especially checking for infection. I doubt there will be any infection, since you're packing it, and giving oral antibiotics. Depending on the wound, it takes a few weeks to heal up good.

I would do just what you have done already. They have great powers of regeneration.
She would probably be fine if the wing needed to be amputated, but she's getting to be an old girl and you'd have to decide if that was what was best for her
Hope she heals ♥️
Thank you, Mary! That makes me feel better. It's mostly up to her healing at her advancing age and she's overall very healthy so maybe she'll be okay. Appreciate your time and support to hold my hand. I hate seeing her like that, but she has a very healthy appetite and seems calm even though she doesn't want to be in the hospital cage. We let her out yesterday alone and all she wanted was to go back to her peeps, poor girl. I wonder why there was no blood, though, on any surfaces or even her feathers. That would have at least clued me in to begin checking birds for injury.

Thank you, Cheryl! I did change the VetWrap yesterday because it was beginning to roll up. I had the idea to use one of my stretchy headbands, which is like an elastic tube, to pull over her body, freeing the good wing. It will not tighten up on her and seems to be staying on well. I have a few others if that one becomes too soiled. I had a chance to look under it and it already seems to be on the way to healing, though this one will take awhile to close completely up; I did re-spray the Vetericyn and it wasn't as open as it was when we started. I think holding the wing down is the only way it can actually heal in any semblance of normalcy. Poor Bash has lost the company of another hen for awhile. Can't have him grabbing her, though. Gosh it's amazing how well they hide injuries under those feathers.

I had to redo the bandage that's holding her wing down and I think I can smell the wound. :(Is that type wound too large to put Betadine into or too late for that? I'll try to get a picture but it's really hard to see. The tear gapes open about an inch or slightly more, like it was torn off the bone. I resprayed with Vetericyn and then packed it with the ointment again put the bandage back again. I have the Silver Sulfadiazene cream they put on patients who have severe burns if that would be helpful. I've used it on chickens in the past but not lately.
