New Chicks Added To Flock!

As crazy as it may sound, pigs will kill chickens. Don’t raise them together. When my dad was growing up in MN he had a neighbor who would burn the pigs eyes out so that he could raise poultry and pigs together and not have any conflict. I’m not saying to do that, just keep them separated.
Brutal

I 2x @NoFlyBackFarm, raising duck and chicks together in the same brooder might not work for their health sake. Ducks get messy and make a lot of wet areas while chicks might get sick if constantly with wet environment. So having separate quarters until they’re mature will be best. I won’t address the pig thing since I don’t know anything about them.

Pasty butt can be caused by temps that are too hot. Watch the temp on their brooder thermometer and make sure it is no more than 100 F if they are less than a week old, and 5 degrees less each week thereafter. You can soak their butts in warm water so that the poop comes off easier and doesn't cause them to bleed. It is important to remove the poop as soon as possible or they can die.

That is exactly how I removed the poop, I tried the wet paper towel but it wasn't really making headway and there was a lot of pulling. So I just turned on some warm water and held her vent under it just a little at a time to wash the poop away.

I have been worried about the temp..their brooder is in the garage and it is warm outside, I turn the lamp off if they seem to be all on the other side of the brooder but how on earth am I suppose to lower the temp by 5 degrees every week? I don't understand this?

Really? That is horrible! I just went out and the pigs and chickens were laying under the shade tree together. I wonder if the pigs accidentally kill the chickens because they are so big? I haven't seen anything that makes me worry that the pigs would intentionally hurt the chickens..I just don't want my babies drinking dirty pig water! But now that you've told me this I will keep an eye out and the first sign of trouble I'm moving my chicks!! Thanks for the heads up.

You can lower the temp by raising a heat lamp, I wasn't sure how many inches so I did a quick google search and haven't found an answer, I believe you can test the temperature little by little by raising the heat lamp until it stays around 90 degrees the first week according to this post https://www.backyardchickens.com/th...amp-18-inches-which-one-do-i-go-with.1224954/. 90 might be better since it is summer. You can also watch to see if they move away from the lamp it might be too hot.
