Well,

She started with 12 eggs and hatched 5! A couple more were fertile, but the chicks were dead. Unfortunately, by the time I left, I could only find 4 chicks, so I think something stole one. We'll see if she can keep the rest! The puppy tried to sniff them and she went Kung-Fu on him!

So cute! It amazes me how much we try to do everything right and pamper and such the chicks, yet mama has them right out there in the wide open big world right away! hehe

Broody is definitely the way to go!

yep, Sissy the silver laced banty hatched out at least nine fluffies, four yellow, five dark auburn; by the time we left there were three yellow chicks (one definitely a roo) and four dark auburn chicks ... and the (grrrr) tenant hasn't emailed me this week with an update ... you never know, with free-range, what is going to happen ...

These pics were taken BEFORE the chick went missing. Sorry I didnt clarify.

Thanks for the nice comments everyone! Cindy, that's what I was telling my cousin. He told me he wanted to take the chicks and keep them in his room. I told him that no one is going to do a better job of caring for them than she is!

Airmom ~ I truly believe that. It amazes me how much quicker and better my hen raised chicks thrived than if they were in a big brooder under a light. Don't get me wrong, there's a time and a place, but I think mama raised is easier for us (definitely) and gives the chickens a better start. Just my opinion, of course and I know that isn't always possible.
