I have 3 Rhode Island Red Ladies (loves of my life). Last week Tilly started laying and her eggs are kinda small, but they look normal. Today someone else laid for the first time!! I’m so excited but I’m worried and I hope she’s ok. I don’t know if it’s Dawn or Laya who laid, but the lighter colored egg is someone’s very first egg today. It has some sort of circular build up and is so light in color. Is my gal ok? Should we eat it? The bottom egg,for comparison, is Tilly’s egg today. Small but “normal” looking. If that’s a thing...

Signed,
New Chicken mom of 24 weeks
Worried in Kentucky
PS they are all acting normal and happy and running around, stretching, chest bumping etc. nobody seems sick

I think it’s common for new layers to have egg issues. Just make sure she has the things she needs, calcium, water, etc, and see what happens over the next week or so; perhaps her next egg will be normal.
I wouldn’t worry unless there was a pattern of mishap eggs.
Thank you so much. She’s a very “kept hen” lol. So I hope it’s just being a new layer. Tilly had perfect eggs from the get go. I will give her super extra attention and extra sprouts and such. Well, I don’t know who the momma was, so they all get extra sprouts and extra everything. So happy right now. One more girl to start laying!! :) Youre truly awesome :)

First eggs are sometimes weird. It looks like extra calcium on the egg shell. I'm sure her eggs will start looking normal soon 🙂 We have one hen whose first egg was shell-less and one whose first couple of eggs were round like ping pong balls.
I’m thinking it’s the combination of being a new layer and I had a new fence built last week. All the hammering and such most likely upset them. It had to be done because the fence was falling down. I feel really bad for stressing my gals :/

Hopefully it's just a one off start up glitch.

I will give her super extra attention and extra sprouts and such.
Might be better to cut out all 'treats'.
Just their regular feed and clean fresh water.

'Spoiling' them is often not good for them, as much as it pleases us keepers.
