The store is NOT horrible. Its a feed store that sells chicks, ducklings, quail, turkeys, etc and yes they have point of lay hens and also laying hens in cages but their living conditions are fine and they are only there awaiting a new home with a big coop. These are not hens that were raised at the store and butchered, these are hens that were specifically ordered and shipped straight from a hatchery as point of lay or laying hens and they probably come with their beaks trimmed. Trimming beaks is not something I would do but I don't feel it obscene to trim a beak when it is for a temporary living situation especially when the bird has no access to the outside to wear down its beak on it own. I think it is unnecessary to be bashing this store. And no I have no relationship with this store. I have bought BBW turkeys from them this year and was able to speak to the manager and the other workers about the birds being sold..

Don't get me wrong, I don't think the store is horrible, never been there. Just don't like beak trimming. With that being said you do bring up a good point about not being about to wear them down on their own.

You can raise and slaughter chickens to eat but not trim their beaks? I don't believe in it at all but there is no way this is illegal.

i'm not saying it is
but you know how some so called animal lovers can be
they will call the police for some really odd reasons.
if they saw chickens with 1/2 their beaks missing they might not be all that happy & over react
next thing you know they are dreaming up all sorts of things
that you may or may not be doing
that was the point i was trying to make
but no it's not illegal as far as i know

if i ever walk into a store to buy something & see poultry with their beaks chopped off i will find the manager at once & tell him/her in a loud voice "you people are a bunch of butchers & after seeing this i will buy nothing here, have a fine day!!!

I have actually done that. I went to a feed store here in derry and there were like 100 day olds in a small livestock feeder with No beaks. Really ****** me off and I complained. We have since boycotted several local stores due to this. My Mother in law actually said we needed to debeak as well. That did not go over well with DH lol

I have several young LF 1/2 Imported English and 1/2 SOP American Buff Orpington Cockerels available.. These are going to be really nice BIG birds and that will bring new genes to your flock. I think some of them are like 4 months old. 35.00 for 1 or 60.00 for 2.
