I think that was you I met at tractor supply this morning. Nice meeting you, good luck with the birds. Spent the day with mine, they actually are flying up on our arms now and laying down.

Yes that was me

Nice meeting you also and nice to know others with birds in the area! I can't wait to get to know mine better and have them climbing around on me

The guys are really going above and beyond on the coop, so it will be a great house for the flock!!!! Next will come the run, as we talked about at the TSC ! I'm thinking 10' by 20' and then free range when I am here, which is most of the time! We worked hard on the coop today, until sundown and the mosquitos chased us off the project. LOL but I think the girls and guys will love their new digs

Good luck with your flock too ! Enjoy, like kids, they grow up fast!!! Mine are sleeping and I'm headed there too, so nite and will chat again!

On a side note, noticed that the 13th they are having a poultry swap at the ts in littleton. I wish I was off!

Thanks for explaining the poultry swap! We got the coop buttoned up this week-end so as soon as it is dry and I can paint the inside and it airs out from that...they will move to their new house..yippiiee!

Lots still to do, but we got it predator proof and rain proof. We are going to shingle the outside and add metal roofing. The nesting boxes need to be made also, but we got the hole cut in the coop and them screwed boards over the hole so the chicks can go in and be safe. When we finish it up, I will take the gals and guys outside, knock the bottom of their brooder off, and they can have a run around on the grass, so they don't pile up during the work!

After that, the run will go up. I'm thinking a 10' by 20' run. Then they can free range when I am here also...but I want them full grown before that...going to try to work with them in coming when I holler "CHICKEN" and give them a treat...I saw or read another person got them to come that way...sounds logical to me! That way, I can get them inside if need be, when I want them in!!!

To get them to come to you when you want them all you need to do is put some chicken scratch in some sort of plastic container with a lid like a parmesan cheese shaker or something similar. When you want them to come to you just shake the container and yell chicken. They will all come running faster than the wind blows lol. They will learn it fast so you could start with them now.

Great idea, thanks

I have to wait a little bit though. I do yell "CHICKEN" when I refill their food! I have a VERY jealous kittie, so have been limited on how much attention I pay to them...I had to put hardware cloth on top of the brooder because of her
roll.png
and she's a Bengal, so would eat them if she could get at them, even in my hand she would try...they are just now becoming very aware of their surroundings and such...so very anxious to get them in their coop, plus I can sit down with them and they can get to know me a bit better! Instead of some big thing that reaches in their coop to give them fresh water and feed! They don't like that much, and all run to the back of the brooder box! Just checked the coop and it is drying, but still some damp wood on the floor...I have to do a double coat too, so thinking, by this week-end? Lord willing!!!! If not before. Soon as the paint smell is gone!!! I have the windows propped open and the door too. Once we shingle, we will put two vents in the top also, for more ventilation. We can always add another window if we need to, but they are fairly good size, so hoping that will be enough with the top vents. The guys did double walls, two floors, with chicken wire under those...and we have hardware cloth on the inside of both windows! This thing is tight!!! Nothing getting in this coop!!! It's off the ground too! Gonna have to put more hardware cloth on the run side and bury some...maybe use cement too? We have lots of predators...It's mostly in a small woods "island" separate from the real woods, so they will be cooler in the summer and warmer in the winter!

I read just about everything on here I could and asked lots of questions..it's been near 20 years since I have had chickens/chicks so much has changed and my memory isn't the same either LOL!!! But I think I have the predator stuff under control! I can't believe how fast they are feathering out! They are getting their body feathers already. The pecking order is in full swing too. No real pecking, just standing each other down by staring face to face until one gives in and walks away. The ones I think are Roo's do a little hopping thing too LOL! I think there are two cockerels....but I MIGHT have one more, or a late starter pullet...don't know yet! Ohhh I can't wait to get them in their house/coop!!!!! They are gonna love the space!!! and their run, when it's built!!! I have some old tree stumps that are full of bugs for them that will stay in the run. I have three that will roost on the little one I built for their brooder box, during the day...it's so cute to see them up there!

This may sound stupid but I have a Pekin Duck that I wanted to spend time w/ it. So the bathroom floor was the only one that I could clean easily, close the door and keep them close to me, sort of. I wantd them to love me and they were always running away. Do you have a room like that that the cat can't get in and their safe and close to you?! Animal Lover Here! lol

Really in Littleton ? Where ? I am working in Littleton from 2-6 but maybe I can pop in.

I live in Dalton.. still building my coop. have to get the rest of the chickens in tit. So I am either working at Home Depot in Littleton or working on the coop. Haven't been even on the computer much, happy I signed in today.

Very excited . had a bear visit the coop, It didn't get in just caused the chickens to yell a lot ! Guess I am doing pretty OK getting this thing built. He left a few muddy foot prints on the door nothing more.
