We got ours at the Blue Seal Feeds in Nashua on Bridge St near the tracks.

Ok great, thanks.

I have seen a bunch of people talking about this everywhere here. What do you use this for? Do you think it works? How do you provide it to your birds?

Hello all, Dan in Durham checking in. I am looking for anyone that wants to split a chick purchase with me. I have 5 in the brooder now, but 1 looks to be a roo (wont be keeping him) and I would like to get a couple more to add to the "flock". Problem is the min. 12 law in NH, does anyone want to split a purchase? Rockingham Feed in Exeter has birds in already.

Best regards,
Dan

We use DE (diatomaceous earth) as a drying agent in the bedding in our coop. It's very absorbant and definitely helps to reduce the humidity level in the coop. We just sprinkle it around like baby powder, a little goes a long way. Be careful to avoid breathing it though.

It's also commonly used for pest control where chemicals are a concern. I have to say that we haven't had any pest issues (flies, fleas, mites, etc) in our coop, but I can't definitively say it's due to the DE. Our chickens like to dust bathe in the bedding so the DE gets in their feathers.

I've also read conflicting theories about it's effectiveness in controlling internal parasites when fed to chickens. We haven't intentionally fed it to our chickens, but the DE we buy is "food grade" in case they eat it.

Hello all
I have to confess I am in Massachusetts but I am really close to the boarder and my cousin has a farm in Mason so maybe I can stay in this thread as a honorary member? I am planning on building a flock of Rhode Island Reds and perhaps Delawares this spring and want to work on a strong gene pool. I am not buying from hatcheries. I want to acquire chicks or pullets with good roots. If you will have any available please let me know

For whatever reason, it is the law in NH. You must buy a total of at least 12 chicks at a time from a retailer. As a private sale, you can buy as few as you like

However, I will tell you that last year when I had a little box full of peepers at the register in Tractor Supply, the cashier certainly did not open the box to count
