Hello, my name is Terri and we just bought a house with 3/4 of an acre of land. We would like to get some chickens this spring so we are starting to research coops and pens. I would welcome any and all words of wisdom. I'm super excited. I had chickens as a kid but it has been years since I have had them.

What kind of coop are you planning?
Here are basic things to consider.

• Ventilation
• Climate
• Make it walk-in
• Make it bigger than you need for "chicken math"
• Flock size
• Flock breeds
• Location- local predators
• Budget
• 4 square feet of space per chicken in the coop, 10 in the run (50 or 100 if you want a grassy area to stay grassy)

We are in Southern California so the weather is normally pretty nice. Gets in the 100s in the summer sometimes but rarely below 35 in the winter. We are thinking maybe 5 hens.
