Is your cockerel sick because he's infected with the Virulent Newcastle Disease? If not, can you get him vaccinated? Once you've resolved his respiratory issues, why wouldn't you be able to get a friend for him eventually? Is the coop outside? He may be happier if you keep him inside for now. There are people who do keep house chickens if that's something you might want to try:

He doesn’t have New Castle, as soon as the state lifts the regulations I can get him a friend. His coop is on my fire place, he has toys and has oddly enough befriended my cat. What worries me is anytime I leave the living room he cries and paces in his coop. I even took him on a parrot perch to the bathroom counter when I showered this morning. I’m glad he loves me, I do. In my students words he’s my chicken son. I want to do whatever I can, short of getting him friends as their isn’t anything I can do about the state situation.

get him a diaper and let him roam! He can follow you that way!

Try giving him a stuffed toy he can cuddle with. I wish I could offer more suggestions but people usually ask about very young chicks. It's much easier to find work arounds for them.

Welcome to Backyard Chickens, Hope you will enjoy it as much as we do.

Hello and welcome to BYC - thanks for joining us.

This is a useful link of BYC guides to take a look at announcements-feedback-issues-guides.3 I’d suggest including your location using the guide in that link. You can use this link to contact members in your area - Find your State's thread.

Best wishes

BTW have you been using your fireplace? Two things maybe he is too warm above the fireplace, and secondly maybe fumes from it are driving his respiratory symptoms.
Do you ever cover his cage or? at night. Does he quiet down in the dark?

It's a long shot but maybe hearing a radio would make him feel less alone. Maybe he would pay some interest to a TV screen where he sees movements.
