New Jersey

I am cutting back on birds to focus on some of my other breeds, so i have a pair of Show Quality Black Cayuga ducks for sale, one pair of silver duckwing old English game bantams and a trio of naked neck bantams. I have a Largefowl Salmon Faverolles Pullet and Black sumatra bantam hen for sale too, but i have someone interested if it doesn't work out then they will be for sale too.

I've been looking for a naked neck pullet/hen.
How old? Do you have any pictures? Will you sell one female? I can't keep roosters in my town :(

Hi fellow New Jersyites! I'm new tovthe forum and learning as much as I can. I'm from Southern Jersey, in Hammonton, 30 minutes from Atlantic City, on the way to Phili. I am planning a traftor coop for this spring. I am pretty excited to see there are people from Jersey on the forum.
I am strongly considering RIR for their laying, friendliness and ability to handle cold. Does that sound like a good breed and do you need to do any special insulating or heating for our average winters?
My wife is looking forward to having chickens since she had them when she was little. My son who is 5 says he just wants a toad.....lol he will love them. Chickens I mean..

Hi! We just got chickens this past year. Raised as chicks. We had one RIR that was hand held as a baby but ended up continuously attacking my young son. Are barred rock and silkies are by far the most docile and child friendly. Good luck

Thanks for the helpful info. I was reading recently through the reviews on breeds and it was giving mixed feedback on the RIR as well. How do you find the barred rock to be for laying frequency? I had read that there is a production RIR that is mean. Did you have just a regular RIR?

True RIR's are difficult to find. Even with all of the shows I've been to, I've rarely seen them. However, production Reds show up at every show, and are almost always identified as such and disqualified. Once you've seen the real thing, you won't be confused again.

What is your main interest in having a flock? Egg-laying ability? Pleasant pets with breakfast benefits? there are a lot of breeds that will meet either designation. My personal experience has been that true egg-layers are much flightier than the dual-purpose or meat breeds, but I know others are devoted to their egg-layers. It's best to take a survey of a large sampling, and meet up with some breeders and ask them questions. (Barred Rocks are dual-purpose.)

If I were to raise the BR birds does the coop need to be insulated? I have some materials on hand and would prefer not to build a heavy coop. I want to make the coop mobile. I was planning on using 1/4" plywood with a thin insulated board with vinyl on the outside to protect the wood. Will the birds keep themselves warm enough for one of our typical winters?
