Hey everyone

Monmouth County here!

Anyone know of anywhere I could purchase adult chickens? I'm interested in using them for meat purposes and there's a BYCer who is going to teach me how to process them tomorrow. I'd really like to bring a couple of my own, but all of my chickens are too young/layers

I've called Agway and Ricks and neither could help me. I even tried that farm in New Egypt, but they don't sell single animals.

Any of you guys?? Thanks!

I hate to say Harker's Auction or another auction. You'd mostly probably only find roosters anyway, but if you want them for processing then..... I know Harker's which is in Tabernacle off 206 is Saturday nights.

Are you talking about the Agway In New Egypt. I hate Hawkers also. I have to have alot of will power to go. I have gotten some nice supplies there cheap. If you can go with someone so you don't buy out of sympathy. My biggest problem. Only take as much money as you want to spend if you take to much you will spend it.Some times if your lucky someone will buy a lot of 10 and be willing to sell you just one or two. Let me know if you want to go we can support each other. Every Sat. at 6pm. but you want to get there early to look so your not rushed. My daughter is in 4-H here in ocean county I'll ask around. There is a place in Lancaster that sell white Muscovys of eating. you might try there. Try looking up Emu or Turkey farms in NJ online maybe. Do you want hens for eating or eggs also? Do want chicks?

Thanks so much for the help, guys!

Yes, Agway in New Egypt. I asked there today about ordering in some "Freedom Rangers" for me and I didn't get a very pleasant answer.

I ranted about it over in the meaties section of the forum!

I may order some online. Anyone want to go in half on some chicken broilers? I don't want 25+ birds. We could even order from Ideal online and get in... 14 birds and each take 7? I'd lean towards the slower growing red broilers. I'm trying to stay away from Cornish X's.

I went to the Tabernacle auction for the first time on Saturday night. We got there a little late and saw the tail end of the poultry auction. Let's just say... that place... is like....no where I've ever been. lol.

I went with my boyfriend and we'd gladly go back again if anyone ever wanted to meet up there to go half/partial on anything. We have about 17 pullets right now that we're raising for eggs.

I've got the urge to try the meaties though.

You guys are a big help!

I need to say that I've known a few people who have ordered the meaties and said they never would again. I was there at a Chickenstock last October when they finished off the tail end of a batch of twenty-five. They were eight weeks old, and she had started having to slaughter them at five weeks, because they were getting so big. These were enormous, ungainly, filthy birds. They eat a tremendous amount of food and they coop was disgusting, compared to the same number in other similar coops there. Other people said they had the same issues, and would never have them again.

There is a farm in North Jersey that grows and sells the Freedom Rangers, I believe. I think I found them on a slow food website.

Good luck.

Cornish X's get very large and have been known to have the issues that you're describing.

I plan on purchasing "Freedom Rangers" or similar birds. They don't get as fat as the Cornish X's and actually live their life like a normal chicken.... free ranging and walking around.
