New Jersey

Kirbys has cayuga ducklings coming on wednesday woohoo. Now to find Kirbys.
I was just on Kirby's website...says they are in Medford, NJ. On April 14th they are having a chicken keeping talk, which I might attend. Looks like a solid place to get chickens in New Jersey!

Is have some new chicks for sale and I have a friend in 4H that needs to sell some of her birds fast an aylesbury drake(rare) homing and fantail pigeons and modern game BT rooster message me for details

Thanks to this post right here I visited the show at Handy Acres farm today and went home with a modern game bantam rooster. Zach, I saw you, but was too distracted with manhandling the rooster to go and introduce myself -- sorry about that.

Also, I ended up getting the rooster for free, and now I feel a bit stupid for not at least making a donation to the 4H club right there. I want to make a donation -- the 4H website lists only the program at Rutgers (4-H Youth Development at Rutgers University). Is this the outfit responsible for the show at Handy Acres today?

I'm so sorry. That's so strange. Is it possible it was sick?

She showed no signs of being sick. Yesterday she was chasing the little silkie around the cage. I had her in my arms. She seemed fine. They are in the kitchen cause there's only the two of them so they get lots of attention. Weird

Shadow Rabbit- my daughter is still obsessed with dragons. She draws them constantly. Usually she's riding them in her pictures but not in these. She has about 15 of these drawings, all the same, on her wall. Since she's also a girly girl, the dragon is usually wearing a cupcake for a hat. I don't know where she comes up with this stuff.

And don't ask me what's up with the two headed chicken in each picture!

My daughter would spend hours drawing. Her fine motor coordination developed so much faster then my three boys. They are the cutest dragons.

Does anyone here have a vine plant growing on their run? If so what is it. I would like to plant some type of vine plant
on one side of our run but *everything* I look up says it is toxic to chickens, dog, people, the air ( I am frustrated ). So now I was going to try honeysuckle, just your run of the mill yellow and white honeysuckle. But guess what that seems to be toxic too

Any suggestions????

Oh wait, I found one she's riding.

I too wanted a vine plant, but I didn't know what's safe either...

I have red honeysuckle growing along my fence. It's flowers are two tone, like a pink and fuchsia. The hummingbirds love it. I also have red and yellow trumpet vines in the yard. They love to hide under the bushy parts of the plants. They don't seem to bother them, although if it was on the run it may be a different story. How about a grape vine?

I feel very guilty, and I apologize, for not mentioning that Kirby's had a bit of a chicken thing today, where I had my girls on display, and they had their baby goats out, and someone else brought rabbits and sheep. I can only blame my horrendous schedule for making me forget everything except to remember to show up. This is the third year in a row for this, so I'm sure they'll continue the tradition. The store is definitely worth the trip, the town is delightful, and there is the great shopping corridor of Rt. 73 right there.

The chicken talk on the 14th is intended for those with a bit of experience already - it's like chickens 102. More terminology, diseases, etc. The basics are covered in 101 - which they will probably host a couple of times this summer. So, if you're still in the planning stages, this might be a bit of info overload. I'm going to do my best to get there - you can always learn something new.

Kirby's will have chicks for several weeks over the summer. They are the nicest people ever, and their business has been there for 137 years in the same family. You can contact Sarah, or get more information on what chicks are arriving when, on their FB page.

So sorry - been there. Sounds like "chicken disease." (That's what I started calling it, since it's a big mystery.) I've lost several over the years to that. No one can explain what it is, or how to prevent it. Even my vet says he's done necropsies on his birds that died from it and can find nothing. This is one of the reason I recommend at least four, so you're never left with just one. It one of the (luckily few) unavoidable negative realities of chicken-keeping.
