New Jersey

Hi,
My name is Lauren and I am from Gloucester county New Jersey in a residentail area. I am married to Jim, I am a SAHM to my son Miles and fur baby Rosco. My husband and I are currently in the process of to adding a few hens to our mix. We are not total newbies to this, my husband's Granmother has a farm in Salem county and we are there frequently helping with the sheep and other animals. But we really love the chickens and other birds. MY son LOVES to feed them and just watch them. So we thought it was time to get a few of our own. My husband and I are on a quest to provide our son with healthy locally grown food. So this just makes sense for us to start with chickens ( and that all we are allowed to have).
As much as a wonderful and super knowledgeable resource Grandmom is to us, I am hoping to connect with other neighborhood BYC owners. I want to hear what works and what does not in South Jersey. I would also like some suggestions on what chicken would be good starter chickens for us. We want chickens for eggs to start with and only 4 max, and I am having a hard time finding a hatchery that will only sell me four pullets, I was thinking of heading to the auction. I was there today(auction off some rams) and they had boxes of pullets ranging from 2-25 in a box. Has anyone done this, if so what are the pros and cons other then the fun gamble it could be.
I would also LOVE to meet some really local people (west deptford area) and have a great little support network.
Thanks in advance,
Lauren

I have had some great luck finding chickens on Craigslist in southern Jersey/PA area. Lots of people selling or giving them away. :)
I am sure you probably know, but Bantam chickens are small breeds and lay small eggs. Since you are looking for eggs, you may want to stick with standard breeds for bigger eggs! :)

Welcome Lauren! I think you will have some luck going through Craigslist south & central regions and the Philadelphia Craigslist. There is plenty out there. Like mentioned stick with the large fowl. Rhode island reds, sex links, and orphingtons should be easy to find still. Good luck.

Welcome! I'm in Jackson right by great adventure. I don't head down your way too often. So what do you have in your flock?

We are down in Moorestown....about 15 minutes outside of Philly. I have been in/thru Jackson lots of times!
Our flock:
4 Silkies (Fiona, Oliver, Autumn, and Misty)

That's a nice number of chickens. Do you free range them at all or do you have a large enclosure. I free range my girls a lot lately since the run I have I feel is not large enough. I have nine right now
2- Easter eggers. Sunny & Dottie
2- barred rocks. Cookies & cream
1- red sex link Pickles
1- buff orphington Miss Henny Penny
1- lt. Brahma Mrs. Puff
2- exchequer leghorns No names yet just got them recently

Can you tell my three boys named the food and cartoon character ones. :p

Welcome to all of the new comers!

Our neighbor walked over last night to ask if we have chickens because he found a dead one last week in his yard. It was our RIR "Chickie". The one the opossum took. We got to bury him and my son collected a bunch of shells and stones to decorate the area with. I was so sad but it was nice to have closure. Not knowing where she ended up was really hard. He said he's seen an enormous stray cat roaming around so who knows what it was but the trap is still set and ready.

The remaining girls will be in their summer coop (aka, the temporary one in the garage) until their official one is complete. Nothing is getting them in this new coop. It's so sturdy, put it this way, my husband said if we get another one of these crazy storms or worse yet a hurricane, we are all going out and getting into it.
