New Magpie Thread!!!!

Ok. Thanks. Does everyone worm their ducks? I read it is a must.

No.
IMO you should never worm unless you know they have worms and are sick.
Some people will strongly disagree, but in my experience ducks are very resistant to worms. I have had them for years and years, never had a problem with worms.

I am considering picking up 5 crested Magpie ducks. I have not had this breed before and would like input about them.

Magpies are great dual purpose breed. They are supposed to be very tasty, but I have yet to cull any of my ducks. The darn fox has taken care of that for me..and no not by my choice...Magpies can be a little on the flighty side so unless you had raise them they will probably not be super friendly. They also tend to be a very randy breed of bird so you want to make sure that you have plenty of girls for each of the drakes that you have, especially with crested. It would not be good for the boys to get too aggressive with the girls. I have both crested and non crested magpies. My first crested girl was abused very badly by some of my drakes..that I have since gotten rid of...but now her crest will not grow back because they damaged it so badly. My suggestion is just to make sure that there is a VERY minimum of 2 girls per drake, but 3 or 4 would be much better, 5 or 6 is best.

Magpies are a great breed of duck that is very low in numbers and there are not enough of us that are breeding them. There color pattern is hard to perfect to the standard which is why many breeders don't have magpies. I love mine and encourage them as much as I can...I just had a good patterned non crested hatch the other day...It's a keeper!

I have never wormed my ducks and don't plan on it unless I see that there is a problem. I don't believe in pumping animals with un-needed medicine...I try to do things as naturally as possible, but will not hesitate to bust out the "big guns" when and if they are needed

I have two drakes and four females. All the girls brooded clutches this year. Two were very dedicated mothers who hardly ever left their nests and two took a lot of coffee breaks...guess who had a much higher hatch rate? LOL

Yes, Magpies are available in Western WA. I got mine at the Monroe Co-op. I think the Snohomish Co-op had them also.

Left to right: Larry, Curley and Moe. Curley is crested.
