From what I hear, not all roosters are created equal, some can turn out downright mean -to people and hens. So getting more girls wouldn't necessarily be a solution. If you want fertile eggs to hatch your own babies, you may want to keep your best cockerel.... but remember, half of those hatched will also be cockerels and the cycle starts again.

If you can't bear to part with your boys, keeping them in a separate flock works for a lot of people: Rooster Flocks

My birds are mostly pets for the eggs. But I do need to think about the overall health and productivity of my flock as well. As they get older, they can be more prone to disease and parasites as well as decreased egg laying. I have an older hen that I'm struggling with culling so I completely understand your dilemma. When I first started I had every intention to rotate out my oldest birds to make room for new chicks: A 3 Year Chicken Rotation to Optimize Year-Round Laying but I haven't accomplished it yet.
