My name is Bob Valenta. I do not raise chickens, yet, but I have been wanting to for some time. I have many friends and neighbors, who do raise chickens, and I find them very fascinating.

I am from North Fort Myers, (Lee County) FL. Several of us in the area are currently engaging the community, and our County Commissioners, to change our county code/ordinance which forbids any chickens in residential areas. Please find my post in ‘Local Chicken Laws & Ordinances’ Thread.

I look forward to making some great connections here

Greetings & Salutations. Welcome Bob.

I am familiar with your area. Great that you have others that also want the code changed. You may want to consider adding that you will not have roosters. The crowing early morning and during the day can turn some people off. Also that they will be confined within a fence, secure from escaping. Maybe even brainstorm together on how to write what you would like the code to be. Include containment, coop/run sizes, security from any escaping, no roosters etc. You may also want to include the limit of the size of the flocks, like maybe 8? Though some cities limit to 6 w/no roos. Include, and I do not know how to word this but the coop cannot be an eyesore, which could be a concern in Lee Co.

I will stop here...but give me some time and I can come up with more good stuff, aka Gong show. 🤣 Think of the objections and counter them in the beginning. in your proposal.

This is a wonderful site on which to Learn and enjoy. We are pleased to have you in the community.

Thanks for the suggestions. We are already putting together a panel for members and non-members to serve on, to create the exact proposed language we want to see. We weighed heavily on whether to include anything about roosters. There are some supporters who don't have a problem with roosters, and many who do. We don't want to risk losing either's support on this. We just address it like this... as soon as anyone mentions roosters, we interrupt, and assure everyone that we are only talking about hens.

With that said, I personally don't have a problem with the 2 nearby neighbor's roosters, but I also fully understand those who do. I suppose if it was right next door, I might feel differently.

We have an entire Google Drive full of docs, news, articles, studies, codes, laws, and history from which to draw, when creating our proposed ordinance amendment.

What we lack is pressure on the commissioners that is overwhelming. So, I ask everyone to please take a minute and submit a form to create an email plea to our commissioners. It's super easy, and it is sent to them by the website, but CC'd to the submitter. If you happen to be in another area at the time you send it, there's no real way for anyone to know that.

It seems you are prepared. Though we have not lived in a city or in town since 1990 (Thank God, literally), we understand some people's objections and it is usually due to roosters/cockerels crowing and an unsightly coop in a neighborhood.

Are you stating that someone from another area or state, can send an email plea?
