New member! Lice/mite problems…

Hello and welcome to BYC! :frow Glad you joined.
Have you treated the birds with a permethrin based poultry spray, stripped every bit of bedding out of the coop and sprayed every surface with permethrin and rebedded with fresh bedding then repeated all of this again in 7 days and again in 14 days after the first treatment?
Not yet… but I’m heading that direction! Thanks for the suggestions!!!

Wow! Thanks to everyone for their nice welcoming wishes and advice!!! I went out after dark last night and shown my flashlight in the coop, expecting to be totally grossed out with the visions of mites running up my poor girls’ legs, and … nothing! So, now I’m thinking it’s lice! Tomorrow I’ll do a thorough inspection looking for the little buggers and checking the base of feathers for nits. Thanks for all of the great info!!!

Welcome!
Lice are harder to get rid of so make sure you don't miss one weekly treatment with permethrin. Treat all birds and coop for no less than 3 weeks in a row.
If you miss a week start over.

This will work too:

Ok, I’m ready to use this! I’m just sorting out logistics as reading the back of the container is scarey!!! Could you talk me through how you did it?! I was thinking a chair in the chicken area, a bath towel on my lap, mask and maybe eye protection?!

That sounds good. Ive never bothered with a mask. I just do a towel and spread it on well, especially in the butt area.
I have heard of people putting the powder in a paper sack and pulling it up to around the chickens neck and giving it a little shake. I'm certain that wouldn't work with my flock. Id never catch a 2nd one after the 1st one started carrying on.
I usually wait until dark so that its easier to catch and handle them.
