Glad to meet you. Happy Mother's Day surprise!! Best wishes taking care of those chicks! They are quite adorable and we become quite attached to them as they grow - I bet you will too!

You can find some good articles about chick care in the Forum on Raising Chicks, but you can use the SEARCH bar to look for specific questions. You had better get that enterprising near son-in-law to work making you a good coop and run for those babies. They grow up fast!

Some types of Barnevelders can be sexed by patterns, but apparently, some can't. Here is an article about it. There are several people here who swear by the breed, but apparently, you have to get the right type within the breed.

Deep breath! Incorporate the chick routine into the routine you already have... much less stressful. :hugs
I read the article and I guess i have to wait. I had no idea there were different types if Barnvelders.
Well the near son in law is NOT. He actually bought the chicks for himself as and he lives in an apartment! He is very helpful in buying extras for them. I have had to research about coops and which ones to get and about everything else. Lots to learn! Thanks for your help!

Chickens tend to be the beginner poultry. Most people start off with chickens, and end up getting ducks, turkeys, quail, pheasants, or peafowl a few years later.
Oh my! We will be lucky just having the chickens! We live in the middle of a subdivision but we dont have HOA as we have the original farmhouse. We live on only an acre and a half so..::::: I think chickens may be our limit and hopefully we will have females in this group!
