My new toy, I mean tool.

Today was an expensive day! They didn't have any decent nails at the Habitat Store, so off to Home Depot I went. $20 for a box of 3"drywall screws...they're galvanized so they had better work. I also got 2 - 4x4x8 pressure treated posts to set the whole coop on. The concrete piers will have to wait until we've had a payday...they're $7.50 each, but that comes with the metal do-hickies to set the 4x4's on.

Updated cost list to come...I need to go find what I already have, lol.

Updated cost of materials list:

$ 2.04 - Pressure-treated 2x4's (4 at 4+' in length) - will be used somewhere, maybe not this project, we'll have to see
$ 2.04 - OSB (or whatever it is)
Free - 10 Pallets! (3 of the big blue kind...2 of which are going to be the bottom of the coop)
Free - 2 Pallet Crates
$ 4.40 - Pressed Boards sheets (3 huge full? pieces & 2 small pieces)
$ 6.52 - Paint @ Lowe's (MisTinted)
$17.94 - 2-4"x4"x8' Pressure Treated Lumber (for the floor to sit on)
$19.97 - 5# tub of 3" Drywall Screws (galvanized)
$52.91

Still to purchase - 4 - Concrete piers with attachments for 4"x4" ($7.93 each ) - $31.72

Ordered a 100' roll of 1/2" Hardware Cloth this morning! $58.46 for it too, so that just about doubles my materials cost, but I should be done except for the concrete piers! Guess I shouldn't have promised I was done after this purchse (oops)!

I removed the Pressedboard (mdf/hdf?) because it has been repurposed to another project that is way overdue (a cat house for the 2 fatso's that live inside).

The post leveler was just under $4, but I'm not adding in the tools I've purchased simply because we needed them anyway. We don't have many tools, so I've gotten a hammer, pry bar, and the leveler (it's better than the one we already had), and plan to get a reciprocating saw to make easy work of the pop door and such ($22 @ Habor Fright). I can do without it, but the next project I have lined up is the cat house/tree for the indoor "kids" and will need one for that project! I'm driving 400 miles next weekend (each way) and hope to bring home a decent power drill too...the down side of hand-me-down tools is that sometimes they aren't very good! We have a power drill, but it's corded with a very short cord and only spins in one direction!

Except for the pry bar ($2.99 before the 20% off coupon), I only bought tools that are more useful than ones I already had. The hammer we have is small and light, I paid $3.16 for a "better" one. If I were to do a rough tool cost estimate...it'd be around $7 for the hammer & pry bar (bought together and the bill was just under 7...) and $4 for the leveler ($3.97 or something), so I've spent about $11 on tools, and plan to spend around $25 more, but that's not until I get closerto "needing" a good saw that isn't my little hand-held one (flat saw blade w/ a big rubber/wood grip)...I did take down 90% of the Sumacs in my backyard last summer with it though, tough little saw!

ETA: Here's what I got ...they have larger ones that are spendier too.

Thanks! I need to sneak away from cleaning the human house to buy the concrete piers today...then I need the weather to cooperate with me so I can get the ground under the deck leveled & cleaned out. There's some debri from the past 4+ years under there along with the straw/hay that was left from the previous owner's rabbits that they kept under there. We aren't the greatest of housekeepers on the inside and have no idea what we're doing outside! But, we are definitely learning the longer we are home owners! Everything is so much more expensive when you own your home...lol.

Along with the piers, I want to pick up some culled 2x2's so I can start working on the cat house too...our largest cat (the one in my avatar) currently uses tomato and printer paper boxes to lounge in and they are a tight fit! I want to get him something that is comfy and they can both scratch on (& leave my couch alone!), but it's a side project that came up because I bought the wrong type of wood for the coop. But I got a killer deal on it!

I did do some planning on my "chicken-friendly" gardening this week though...I was panning on a 6-pack of plants from each seed paket I bought, but apparently my in-store math didn't add up with what I bought, so I have 5 or so extra 6-pack seed starter areas! So, I'm going to plant extra Sunflowers, squash, and maybe beans (green variety)...I have such a brown thumb but am learning how to get things to grow ecer so slowly! Okay, breaks over...back to dusting and cleaning I go!

I made another purchase today!

Big surprise there, right?

I got another piece od OSB, I need to sit down and count how many I have...I should have plenty now. Along with a couple of 2x4's, but those are going to be used as part of the cat house I have going as a side project to this one. I also got my concrete piers, so work can begin!

I'm following along, too. I am always looking for ideas for my coop project. Thanks for all the pics! That sure helps to visualize things. Good luck with your project.
