New Puppy! Pics - guess the mix!

I am not sure how to say it in technical terms, so please bare with my photo links.

The standard for ACDs states that they should have tight, clean lips.
The breed does indeed have tight lips that pucker at the corners.

This really shows the dingo in their background.

As do traits like their ability to find water just about anywhere (I hear Tornjaks, and other working breeds raised on tough terrain often do to same, as does our ACD), and their almost eerie silence. Unfortunately, I am increasingly seeing these traits being lost in ACD lines, especially those not geared purely towards work.
I couldn't find the photos that really startled me, but droopier and heavier lips seem to be appearing more.

The border collie lacks the ACD 'pucker' in the corners, but the flew tends to make for a clean looking mouth.

Now, I've seen plenty of Aussies with clean mouth corners like the BCs tend to have, but the ones out my way lean towards thicker lips with heavy, triangular corners.

For comparison, here is our Texas Heeler (had to be euthanized due to a neurological issue from the Australian shepherd side)

And here is our ACD.

Could be something else entirely too! If you do a DNA test, let us know the results you get. :)

But they're mixes. My BC mixes have droopy lips (from their lab side), and it didn't really show until they were older. The puppies are pretty young in the pictures. That could make a difference, right? And that's some pretty Aussie-ish coloring.

Yep, for sure. And again, I've seen a lot of aussies with clean mouths and thin lip lines. :) Was just commenting on what I tend to see in the mixes and purebreds out my way involving those breeds.

Well, it seems we can safely say herding mix at this point.

Punk - thank you for your clarification and posting those pictures. Seeing the different breed standards is very interesting. Especially the pic of the ACD from complete dogs guide. That really shows some robust traits like Ruby seems to have. The smaller eyes and wide skull frame especially. Her lower lip has three wrinkle creases on each side. I am sorry about you having to euthanize your Texas Heeler. What a beautiful dog.

Here are some more pics. Ruby is now 13 weeks. I appreciate all of the ideas. I think the coloring is throwing us a bit. And all the Border Collie colors seem represented in the litter. But, the speckles seem very cattle dog. Is that a dominant trait? I wonder what other dogs pass it on - spaniels...? Ruby's left ear is beginning to stand up a bit and her legs are getting quite long. The pics were taken this week. She continues to have a very calm demeanor. Not too serious and definitely not aloof. Just aware and interested and very snuggly. So far she is a pretty easy trainer.

Any recommendations on the DNA test that works best?

Thanks everyone!

Momma definitely has a lot of Staffordshire Terrier (pitbull) in her and she looks super sweet. The other puppies make me think there is possibly Border Collie in there and maybe something else. Border Collie's come in black & white and red or red & white.

If she is part Border or some type of herding dog, she should be a natural at protecting your flock. Good luck with her, she is a cutie and sounds like she has a great personality that will fit in well with your family.

The mother would definitely be a staffy cross because of her head shape. Maybe crossed with a red cattle dog. Then then other half looks like like it would be border collie. Our puppy is a border collie cross and he looked like her when he was younger. Except different colour

the pups are adorable

. They look like a mix between a border collie and pit bull. the mamma is probable the pit, she has the face of one.

I think that the puppies have at least 3 different dads. The only ones I suspect are full siblings are the two chocolate and tan ones. When you were at the shelter was there a lot of certain breeds? If so odds are good that the puppy has some of that breed in her. I would definitely say she has a Brittany Spaniel dad or a cross though. Mom appears cattle dog and pitt or amstaff. Herding ability is a funny thing I have 2 Australian Shepard crosses. 1 is Aussie and Border Collie with no herding instinct and 1 is Aussie and Bassett Hound with a ton of herding instinct.
Anyway she's super cute what ever she is
