New San Diego County Oridnance On Number of Roosters

I am deeply offended by the implication that those of us who oppose this ordinance are either criminal cockfighters or supporters of cockfighting. It feels like slander to me.

Contrary to popular belief, I do not have a problem with backyard flocks, there are lots of them in our neighborhood. What I have a problem with is the one neighbor we have who has, at any given time, between 150-250 Roosters (male chickens that are old enough to crow). That many roosters going off at 4:30 am is a little much. Unfortunately for all of the BYC there are between 100 and 200 people just like him in San Diego County and all of those tethered birds are becoming a problem. Not everyone who has roosters fights them or raises them for fighting, but regardless of how much you love your flocks don't you wonder why someone would want that many roosters? And, in your nice rural areas where everyone has their animals and little flocks of chickens would you want someone to move in and fill their entire 2-5 acres with crowing roosters?

The new ordinance is not aimed at BYC it is aimed at the rooster fighting community. WhiteMountainsRanch posted a response she got to a letter written to BOS with all the questions and concerns BYC had. If you want to take your frustrations about the new ordinance out on someone, go after the ones who have the excessive numbers of crowing roosters, not the ordinance supporters that are happy the ordinance was written is such a way that BYC will still be able to keep their flocks and the rooster fighters will need to drastically reduce theirs!

Yes I did post the "answer" I got back, which was extremely vague and didn't even answer half of the questions.

i was for a short time an officer in this county, I can read between the lines it is not good. I respect the idea and truely wish it would work but many other chicken hobby people will be hurt by doing this. chickens are sexually dimorphic animals, the males are much beter looking than the females and more male are shown than female aprox 85 rooster cockerel entered to show while 15 % are hens and pullets entered.. I breed serama chickens and have given many of my cockerels to 4h kids in various countys to show and have shipped out of state. My serama chicks start a little crow at 2 months of age, They dont develop to the correct serama stance until 8 months of age, so this means that i will not be able to grow my competition birds out becasue they are crowing!! I mean really the answer for meat birds butchering at a few months that is for one specific breed!! cornish cross, I have hatched lots of birds chickens, you get at least 50 % male, these are not cornish they are mostly RIR so what do we do raise it for food, but it sure take a while being a non meat production animal. I have been on sight at a cock fight bust i got an award for doing a dooingg job As an ACO officer, I know we have a problem here in SD county but this law the way it is written is going to halt lots, I know it is politicle, and i appreciate all people opinions. I think i am moving!!

There are noise ordinances to address noise issues. There are cock fighting laws to address cockfighting. There are animal designators in the existing zoning laws to address excessive numbers of animals. There are not very many areas in the county that allow more that 25 chickens. If zoning only allows 25 chickens on a parcel, it should not matter if those 25 chickens are male or female. If some one has 150-200 roosters it is not hard to determine the animal designator for a parcel to see if that person is exceeding their limit. Otherwise I would look before buying property at the zoning and the zoning of neighboring parcels to see what types of animals would be allowed. If I saw that large numbers of chickens were allowed, I would expect to have to live with the noise and smells associated with large amounts of poultry. The person with 200 American game birds could very well be producing birds that end up in fights. If so, conduct a proper criminal investigation. The new law is too broad and there are already existing laws that could be used if needed.

When the ordinance was read the August 2nd meeting she was one of the people who spoke in support of it. She's also the person who has a facebook page dedicated to people who want to complain about rooster noise.
