Boy I feel I dodged a bullet this morning. My poor club footed Silkie chick Minion who is going thru so much already had a human hair wrapped tightly around his GOOD LEG. I just happened to see a tiny bit hanging off that foot when I picked him up to check him. If I had just checked on him in the brooder without picking him up, I would have NEVER been able to see such a hard to see thing that was happening. All that leg floof.. I had to put my glasses on and hit him with a spot light to see it. His foot was just showing signs of swelling. I actually could NOT tell without glasses at first, just a horrid feeling when I picked him up and saw a bit of human hair on his foot hanging off. I have seen baby birds with hair entanglements in the wild before... terrible suffering if not fixed. His foot looks fine now but it makes me sick to think how bad it may have gotten had I not noticed. It was not something you can unwind, I had to take my mini scissors and carefully snip it. So remember to check you biddies feet for human hair entanglements esp. if you have long hair like me. I still feel a little sick about it. If I had not noticed that little bit of hair hanging off Minion's foot, his little foot would probably lost blood supply before I got home from work today. Had I not picked him up, I would not have seen the hair dangle... Minion is a silkie so FLUFFY feet. To make it scarier, Minion only has one good leg and THAT is the one that had the hair TIGHTLY wrapped around it. I can't imagine the MELTDOWN I would be having right now if I had gotten home and found his one good leg totally dead from lack of circulation. His good leg looks fine now. No sign of it being too tight for too long but it had started to swell this morning when I found it.
