New to BYC and to chickens!

Welcome to BYC!

I'm glad you joined.

One of the best ways to tame them is simply to be near them and handle them gently every day. They will be standoffish and frightened at first, but in time they will become used to your presence. In my experience, it is quite normal for chickens to at first not care for treats. If you expose them to different treats every few days or so, they may eventually gain enough courage to try them. Not every chicken likes ever food- you'll have to experiment and see what they like. Some of my birds love treats, and other really don't care.

Chickens are often suspicious of new foods - it may take several exposures to it before one decides to try it. If one likes it the others will join in. Treats should not exceed 10% of their daily feed- like kids with ice cream, it can make them turn up their nose at nutritionally balanced feed. The usually love water melon, plain yogurt, scrambled eggs (don't tell them it could be a relative).

Hi!

I'm new to BYC and to keeping chickens They will come home in April and then the fun begins!

I have one question - I see many people have quotes or list breeds of their chickens on the bottom of the post. Is this only for paying members?

Thanks!

Welcome to BYC! Please make yourself at home and we are here to help.

No you don't have to pay for this. If I am correct I think you are referring to a signature. To make one, go to your profile button, scroll down and click edit signature.

Thank you so much for the welcomes and advice everyone.

I'm definitely trying to get them used to me. I picked them both up for a little while today and although they panicked at first, they settled down.

As for treats, I'll keep trying. They shunned greens and rice, walked though porridge pattys and ignored broccoli. Today they are avoiding pear.

Thanks again,

Looks like you have been given very good advice on your new chickens.
@Clucksandgiggle Also like to Welcome you!

The best advice I can give both of you that I was never told: Chickens are SO much more complicated than anyone ever said. And Chickens are SO much more fun than anyone ever said
