Chirping
Hello all and am excited to make my first post. I have 10 8 week old hens (2 Rhode Island Reds, 2 Barred Rocks, 2 Golden Buffs, 2 Cream Legbars, and 2 Barnevelders). It is really interesting getting to see their personalities develop. The idea of breeding to blend their traits really fascinates me. I wanted to get two or three roosters to create some cool combinations when the hens start laying. I need some advice on what rooster to choose for each one of my combination goals.
Combo 1) Dual purpose bird with elevated egg laying
-Thinking of a Jersey Giant to cross with my RIR? I would most likely keep a lot of the hatched hens for egg laying and eat the hatched roos.
Combo 2) Cool looking bird to cross most likely with my Barnevelders
Maybe I should get a Barnevelder roo to cross with my RIR? Or a RIR roo to cross with the Barnevelder hens? I have been scouring these forums the past day or two and say a potential Welsummer x Barnevelder that looked cool. Curious what a Black Copper Marans, Black Australorp, or Speckled Sussex crossed with a Barnevelder would look like.
Combo 3) Crossing my Cream Legbars with something to raise egg production (while keeping colorful eggs) and/or make the hatched birds larger to be dual purpose.
No idea where to go here.
Other roosters I thought that met my dual purpose category (wife doesn't want feathered feet) were:
White Plymoth Rock
Columbian Wyandotte
Buff Orpington
