New to Chickens

Becky's diaper arrived Saturday. Pouring rain, thought it would be a good day to be inside. She is 8 months old. It did NOT GO WELL! I watched the video on how to put it on and the chicken seemed to care less! Mine, not so much! She pecked at it the whole time but taking it off was a nightmare! She got her head caught in it and you would have thought I was butchering her! She then proceeded to go out and lay a shell-less egg just to show me how much I stressed her out! I won't be doing that again... :(

Greetings and welcome to BYC MKM! So glad you joined us. A chicken really needs at least 1 (most recommend 2, in case something bad happens to one) companion. You know, that speaks its language? They are flock creatures after all. Most of those coops from the hardware store will hold 2-3 (but NO more - despite what they might say/advertise/lie :rant:mad:) birds. Sorry the diaper didn't work out so well. :hmm

Absolutely LOVE the picture of your daughter? Grand daughter? Niece? whichever... what a great pic!

Yes, she apparently came that way. After first 3 days I bought her a small coop from Tractor Supply. I get approx. 5 eggs per week. Fed them to my husband and he lived so we all tried them!

Sorry, but I had to laugh at the last part... :lau I mean, really, did you think they'd be poisonous or something? :gigSo now that you've tried them, how do you feel they compare to store bought? I'd give her another month on your good food regimen and quality care, and then compare!

There's a wealth of info, knowledge and experience shared in the multitude of threads. Browse around and see what interesting stuff you can find. By all means post away when the desire strikes you, especially if you have questions (provide as much detail/info as possible and pictures truly help)... With all the great folks here, generally someone will respond in no time at all. Please make yourself at home!

Oh, if you haven't done so already, PLEASE put at least your general location in your profile. It could be very important if/when you ask for or offer help or advice. You know, climate issues and such. Old folks like me will never remember & look there first. To add it, mouse hover over Account top right and a drop down will appear. Click on Personal Details and scan down. You'll see the spot for Location. Then go to the bottom and save changes. Thanks! Hope you enjoy the site!

Thank you for your advice. I was a little worried about the eggs - not sure of the correct "washing" technique but I have been dating and refrigerating them. I have updated my location as you suggested. I would love to get Becky a companion but from what I have read it looks like I will need another adult. I found an ad on Craig's list for RIRs for $4 each and when I wrote and asked if there were any chickens left the reply I got was "cooked". WHAT??? I am not sure how to go about getting an adult companion for her so I am open for any advice. I live in the Nashville, TN area. The problem is that I still work full time (yes, that is my granddaughter in the pic) and although I have an acre of fenced in land, I wouldn't want to do a dis-service to Becky or the other chicken. She is a cross between a toddler and a puppy. She met the other grandchildren last weekend and her expression said it all! To me it said "What??? I am not an only child?"

I don't know if there are any rescues in your area but you could call them and see if hey have any birds they would let you have/buy. Also, look for local folks with road signs for fresh eggs for sale. (probably more often seen on country roads than city streets) They may have an older bird they'd let go. Or egg sales on Craigs list, etc.
