New to Ducklings

I like that a lot better than using hardware cloth that has too many sharp edges that make me nervous even though I try to cover them with that rubber shelf liner. I will have to search for one of those. I bet it would fit over my white basin. It's always a work in progress!

I hope I didnt make a mistake doing this, but the smell and mess got to be too much. Since they're over a week old I put down a layer of shavings over the newspaper and shelf liner... and they look like they're trying to eat it  Will they figure out it's not good and be ok? And still trying to figure out a good food dish...

Some people swear by peat moss, I am going to try it. If they did eat a little moss, no harm!

For our brooders we use large rubbermaid totes. We use screening formed over 2 pieces of 1 inch PVC pipe at both ends and tied down with zip ties. We then cover it with hay and put the waterers directly on top of the grate. Any excess water drains down and collects into the gap between the screen and the bottom of the container. Then all you have to do is remove it and drain as needed. This has been a life changer for us! No more wet ducklings and it makes cleanup a breeze.

any chance you could post a picture of it?

It's kind of similar to this pic I found only we use PVC pipe to elevate it in the bottom of the cage and we make it cover the entire bottom. Then we put hay over it so the babies aren't walking on bare metal.

that looks just like mine except mine is a bit more redneck than yours. I covered it with that rubber shelf liner you get at the Dollar Tree and it works great and I don't worry about them hurting their feet. No mess at all.
