Hey all, I've come here for a lot of research and looking up knowledge and I'm in need of some advice.
I haven't had chickens since I was a child, so I really don't know what I'm doing, this has been a huge educational site, so thank you all for your posts and comments!
I have an Easter Egger and Olive Egger that are now 4 weeks old. I got them day 1 and wing sexed them so I'm hoping they're both girls.
I live in Laguna Beach, CA and we have June gloom. Its been overcast low 60s in the morning, and only been warming up to about 70 during the day. I started putting the girls out in the coop during the day a couple weeks ago with a lamp for short time periods, and now they're out there all day with no light. They still come in at night to their brooder and they love to nap on me while I watch tv at night (yes they poop a lot). I feel like for their age they're huge and really well feathered from other pics I've compared, but I don't really know. One lost a feather yesterday that looked adult as she was cleaning herself.
I'm wanting to start leaving them outside permanently this weekend when they're 5 weeks old, but will I need a heat lamp? And I block off the nesting boxes? Also will they put themselves to bed if the door is open, and I can just leave the door open so they can come down whenever they want? It's fully secure so nothing can get in or out until they're big enough that I can take the top off and then I'll make their daytime fencing area bigger. Right now they have a dirt and rock area under their coop and I put sod out for them to play in next to it. They get some meal worms as snacks and still love to sit on my shoulders.
