New Year Block swap

When I did the math on the precuts, even fat quarters as to what it worked out to per yard I was shocked!

I figure for the same $ I can get at least 1/2 yd of a bunch of fabrics and just do my own cutting. I know I don't get the whole 40 different colors/patters or whatever, but I figure if I always buy just a little more than I need like even get 1/3 yard instead of 1/4 yard as the smallest size yardage to purchase, then over time I'll build up that great stash of >40 different little strips or whatever and better pinch my pennies. Of course if I win the lotto you can bet I'll buy some jelly rolls & fat quarters & layer cakes & a bunch of fun stuff ;> but til then I'm sticking to what is on sale, and a few extra cutting blades as needed.

Same here, I rarely get any of the pre-cuts, occasionally a fat quarter that really speaks to me, but usually just yardage and on sale.

missouristarquiltco.com MSQ -Jenny Doan, she did the video, they are sometime on sale.
I think the main reason high price, 20 color blended fabrics.

I know MSQ I love MSQ didn't even think of them. I'm just looking for a short cut

no pun intended

I found some Doctor Who printed fabrics, but they are $17.50 per yard or $10.50 per fat quarter!!!!  I didn't even check for how much shipping on top of that    They had a Madame Pompedore, and a Starry Night w a TARDIS in it  (in each of the pics)  Those may be downright irresistible!  Even at those prices!

Quilting fabric here starts at 19.99 and heads to 29.99 or as high as $32.... fat quarter s start around $6.50

Here it is average $5-7 per yard, special fabrics can be up to 10, but if you watch sales you can get good quilting cotton in cool prints for around 3-4 per yard.

It surely is an expensive hobby ... had a deal with myself to use up my stash. Then i signed up for block swaps in colours I've never used..pahahaha!
:lau
I did buy myself a lovely book called Sunday Morning Quilts, guess I'll save the stash for that

ok, I need your expertise, other than the web and Hancock fabrics where can I find layer cakes? oh my walmart doesn't carry layer cakes.

Majack I'm glad you and fenrosie are faring well despite all that is going on around you, how are your parents doing? hope their feet are staying dry

i order from them some. pre-cuts are a bit spendy. You are paying not just for the fabric but for the cut and the variety. Coordinated prints in all the colorways of the fabric line. When i first started quilting (has it been 20 years?) I would have loved some of this because scrappy quilts are my love.

Now instead of buying bits of yardage here and there i can put a scrappy quilt together with some pre-cuts and be really happy with it.

That said, the quilt in the video with the magic iron (gosh I really want to know more about that iron!) could just as easily be made with yardage. One dark and one light, two of each etc etc. Like Kathleen says -> You are the artist!

We could (oh my, what am I saying?) do a fabric swap. I was a member of one (lo, those many years ago) that was for strips. We could swap squares; charms or layers. Or strips. Or not. I'm not sure I could be swaps mistress.

Happy Friday the 13th

Is it that expensive to buy it online? Like directly from a fabric shop?

Some other less expensive sources I like are garage sales, if it looks like an "older persons" garage sale I always stop and look for fabric. And used or thrift stores I look through their home wares section at the bedding and curtain areas, sometimes you can find real gems of yardage that someone has made into curtains or the like that isn't "curtain" fabric but cotton. I don't use those sources for swapping fabric, but for my own quilting fabric. For my own use I have also been known to use other then "quilters cotton" for my own quilts.
