So you make a 12" square 'fence', about 4" high for the nest bowl? That sounds very practical. The birds like it?

Yes. I do mine without a bottom, and the birds love them. I had problems with babies falling out of the boel, and not being able to get back in. but the squares, they are big so they don't go that far, and I only have shavings in the square, and they stay there. That way the shelve\box in bare wood, but the nest has lots of shavings. I like it way more than bowls. anything around 3-4 inches tall is best! and 12 by 12 inches is my favorite, maybe 14 by 14 of you're feeling adventurous.

I didn't see your nest boxes?

I wasn't sure if you were asking me or @backyard pigeons. But our top shelf has 6 nesting boxes. The next one down is just a shelf.

I should've quoted you, sorry. Just wondering how big your boxes are. If they are small, a nest bowl may not be practical.
