Hi all! Been lurking here for a while now trying to learn all I can about raising quail. I have 9 coturnix that turned 1 month old today! For the most part they seem to be doing fine but a few of them have not developed feathers on their backs. I saw one that started developing feathers on the back, but now that it's been a week, it's still mostly just the pokey part of the feather, not the soft part. My question is, is that normal? Semi-normal? They are all eating and drinking fine. If it's not normal, does anyone have a clue what they are lacking? I've searched the site and can not find any threads regarding feathers not developing.

I lurked for about a year before I joined up, and now that I'm here I'm addicted to BYC! you can go over to our learning center and read some really good articles on just about everything, there also might be something there about your question. https://www.backyardchickens.com/atype/1/Learning_Center

and welcome to the flock. I don't know about quail either but, if you go to "Other backyard Poultry" forum above you will find threads for quail, guineas, ducks, geese, you name it.

If you post on the quail thread you will get answers from people that are experienced with them.

Welcome to BYC! Glad you decided to join our flock. I'm a chicken person and don't know much about quail (never had any), but they sure are cute little birds. X2 on the quail link that Mountain Peeps gave you. If you post your questions there, I'm sure that you will get lots of replies. Good luck with your quail.

Quail now there is an interesting bird to deal with and yes nothing out of the ordinary with the feathers but one thing that will haep with feather growth is a hard boiled egg try feeding them one a day just remove the shell and mash up really good and serve I use to do this and it will help ..... But I had valley quail ..... & bob whites ....

Thanks for the warm welcome ya'll! Lol. Oh yes, I've been all over the quail forums and still can't find an answer. I will ask over there though. Thanks again!

Hello there and welcome to BYC!

Sounds like they are still growing in their feathers. These are called pin feathers and they can take weeks to grow in. Make sure none of the others are picking at each others feathers so they have to regrow. Are they still in the brooder? I keep bobwhites too. Quail are fun little birds to keep. :)
