Hi I'm Chris, new to the board, NOT new to raising chickens...but it's been 30 years! My youngest daughter incubated eggs for a science fair project and we decided to get some of our own, since she has to return the birds that hatch. Anyway, we're doing this on a much smaller scale (6 Bantams) where we ordered 100 at a time when I was a kid and had to care for them.

So it should be fun and I'm hoping to get lots of tips on chicks and chickens since I know things have really changed!
 
Welcome to BYC Chris! That's so cool that you raised chickens when you were a kid, a hundred is a lot of birds to have. I do remember when my grandpa was a kid and when he was in 4-H you had a minimum of a hundred birds to raise for a meat or laying project. But six is a really good number to start with, what type of bantams did you order?
 
We usually ordered about 30/70...hens/cocks, to replenish our layers and have some to butcher in the fall.

As far as our new babies, they are straight run, so hoping for at least 3 hens and they couldn't guarantee a breed. I don't really care what we ended up with since we mainly want them for bug control and fun. The banties we had when I was a kid hatched their own eggs quite often, so I wouldn't mind if we end up with one or two that will do that...it's a hoot to realize that you have a mess of babies all of a sudden!
