Newcastle? Or other?

I got a chick 2 weeks ago from a swap, he's been in quarantine. He has been sneezing and has head tremors.

I decided to vaccinate everyone against Newcastle, just in case that is what it is. I did that about a week ago.

Today my adult flock has several sneezers and my rooster dropped to the ground and flapped around in a circle for about 10 seconds. He wasn't dustbathing, he squawked a couple of times like he was upset. He then jumped back up like nothing was wrong.

No crusties, eyes are clear. His looked a little watery.

Do you think this is some sort of deal with the Newcastle vaccine? I had a feeling it might cause a low form of Newcastle, but this?

HELP!

I went ahead and quarantined the rooster. Gave everyone some applesauce with probiotics, vitamins and tylan 50 in it.

Hey, call the company that makes the vaccine and talk to one of their scientists. They are very nice and can give you a lot of info on it. I don't believe I had a problem with it, but that was a long time ago ...................

Newcastles is such a serious and devestating disease that if you at all suspect it, you really need to talk to a testing agency (state ag college, local exensions, etc) and have those birds tested immediately.

I would consider it an emergency.

In the mean time, remember there are many diseases that cause respiratory symptoms, and some that cause neurological symptoms including the tremors (including horse encephalitis).

How are you using the Tylan50? This should only be injected. If you want to use the oral dosage, please use soluble. Tylan50 is meant to go a certain way into the body, not through the digestive tract.

See dosage instructions below (3 day treatment). Incidentally, Newcastles is a virus - are you treating for a possible respiratory disease? If you do, PLEASE do not misuse Tylan as it's a move you will certainly regret as it disables you from using it again in your flock. That's how resistant bacteria are made, please for all our sakes.

Are you seeing any drainage at all? Are you hearing any congestion? When you say head tremors, can you describe with a little more detail? I'd like to help you pin something down if I can.

The baby chick is the only one doing the head tremors. It has gotten smaller and not as noticeable. He's about a month old now. (He has always been seperated from the others.)

I haven't seen the rooster fall over again. Yesterday it was like he "tripped" twice. Today I haven't seen anything at all and we had him in the house for several hours.

I did give them Tylan orally yesterday and a little this morning.

I gave them all yogurt today with vitamins including E capsules squeezed into it.

I'll see if the poultry inspector lady will come out.

An update, in case anyone is following this.

I haven't seen any neurological symptoms or sneezing in about 48 hours.

Not sure if it's because it was a side effect to the Newcastle vaccine and because of that has gone it's course and is gone or if the Tylan 50 and vitamins helped clear it up.

They all seem fine and healthy now.

The poultry inspector lady is going to come out and test everyone though to ease my concerns before fair season.

Good news, bad news.

Hadn't heard any sneezing or seen any neurological signs in several days.

Was out there this morning for quite awhile and all was good.

Came back out at 8pm and one of my young roos was dead and the water bowls were both empty.

It wasn't that hot today, it's been overcast. Not sure if he was dehydrated or if it has to do with everything else.

I bagged him and put him in the freezer just in case.

The poultry inspector lady is coming tomorrow to test everyone. I'm going to see if she wants/needs to take him.

I'm nervous. I HOPE his death was just a fluke or has to do with the water. Hoping nothing else happens over night.

You said water bowls. How large are they and how many birds do you have? Even on an overcast day, the birds need water. How long do you estimate they were without?

I know that it is hard to keep the waterers filled in the summer--seems like I am forever filling and refilling them. Even the automatic waterers need tinkering to keep the water cool enough that the birds will drink.
