speckledhen, I would LOVE to have some blue orpingtons from your stunning guy, Suede, and his pretty ladies.

I don't think my dad's too keen on the idea of hatching eggs right now, however. un We'll see.

So far we're pondering 2 of the Bantam Assortment, a Buff Orpington, Light Brown Leghorn, and either a Speckled Sussex or a Salmon Faverolles. All hens, this time. What do you guys think about these breeds?

You didnt say what you are wanting to do. SO Ill just share my own biases.

Im not a big fan of mix and match flocks. You will do better with a common breed grouping. So get just one, or two breeds at the most.

Neither would I recommend the bantams or the Leghorns where there are children about.

That leaves the Buff-O's, Sussex and Fav's. I'd prefer the BO's and the Sussex over the Fav's, as frilly birds with beards and feathered feet just don't do it for me. So there you go, BO's and/or Sussex.

Just out of curiousity, why not bantams? From what people say on here, they're just as nice as standard breeds. And as for the leghorns, we've decided against that already, but I've never known them to be aggresive, just nervous and flighty.

I have a mix and match flock and totally love seeing all the different colours, sizes, personalities running around. I liken it to watching a fish tank in terms of the swashes of colour at any one time. My salmon favs are alongside my buff orps my friendliest birds...they are quite happy to peck at your feet until you pick them up. I have a real mixture:
4 RIR ( one is a roo)--->pretty birds, plain dark brown/red colour, pretty friendly...certainly the roo is VERY friendly and lets my 6 yr old pick him up.
3x RIW pullets
3x production black pullets ( both the PB and RIWs are about the same...not quite as friendly as the RIR and no where near as friendly as the BO or SFs)
2x ameraucana pullets ( and 1 roo)--> new to us as adult birds and becoming more friendly
3xbuff orp pullets--> STUPIDLY friendly...will bug the crap outa you until you pick them up and pet them, then will go to sleep in your arms.
2 xSalmon favs--> very cute--> look like grandpa munster...very friendly too.
Few x bantam cochins/silkies and 1 x standard cochin--> not nearly as friendly as I would have thought they would be...nice birds but just kinda flighty.
1x silver hamburg--> REALLY flighty but pretty.

Aran, you are written in the book in PEN, buddy.

But, gee, is everyone going to throw stones at me if I take an "elderoo approach" and sell Suede and Velvet? This summer about did me in for real.
I actually did consider going to a regular flock with my sweet Barred Rock rooster, Hawkeye, as the only man around here and eventually, being basically a Barred Rock flock with a few of my oldies, but goodies still around. I do like color, but keeping the breeders separate makes for more work, no doubt about it.
