I have a Pekin that has limped his whole life. It seems to be getting slightly worse. I have heard Niacin works wonders. I am just not sure what kind to get or how to give it to him. They all drink out of the same water source. Has anyone ever had experience with this?

I don't see why it would hurt to try him on some niacin and surely won't hurt the rest it's just B3 and what isn't needed will go through kidneys and out. I have a 10 yr old Muscovy duck who is limping and can't find any reason why other than possibly arthritis. So she is getting Glucosamine/chondroitin. I give her a pill smooched into a small piece of bread. But you can also use brewers yeast and put 1 Tab over each cup of feed you give them or crush up a niacin tablet or open a capsule and put 125-150mgs in a gal of water given fresh daily.
I actually like Nutritional yeast best it has more niacin in it. If you decide to try niacin make sure to buy plain not time released or flush free.

Welcome to BYC! Have you checked his gimpy leg for swellings, joint stiffness, or sores on the bottom of his feet?

I am constantly checking his feet and legs. I believe he’s a Jumbo Pekin. My fiancé seems to believe it’s because he was in too small of a cage when he was younger, and because they are meat ducks they aren’t meant to live as long. He’s chubby but has lost some weight which I thought would help, but it hasn’t.

I give my ducks daily niacin supplements through Kelp4Less through ebay. I just sprinkle about 1 T a day over their feed.

I think you maybe right They are meat birds and probably the weight on top of ducks not having such strong legs anyway and being in too small a cage probably started all of this, Hopefully you can help some by trying the B vitamins or maybe seeing an avian vet who can give something for pain management if nothing else can be done. But def try and keep him from getting too heavy. Limit his outside running around time so he can rest more. He needs exercise but if he is constantly trying to keep up with the rest of your flock he maybe over doing.

Does anyone know if acidified copper sulfate is good for ducks too? I use it sometimes for the chickens and was wondering it I could give it to the ducks sometimes for their crop maintenance.
