You'll either love it or hate it. My oldest DS loves it, I hate it.

But then, I've never had any fresh goat's milk either, so...

From what I've read, fresh goat milk tastes the same or better than cow milk but has a higher butter fat so it's richer and creamier - which I love. I drink whole milk and can't imagine why people drink 2% or 1% like my daughter does. I've told her, why don't you just buy a pint of milk and add it to a gallon of water?

Also, based on what I've read, fresh goat milk doesn't taste anything like canned goat milk which is, by most people's taste, terrible.

That's great Monique!
I am so happy for you. It looks like they are settling in nicely with your herd. We are enjoying the sunny days too after all the rainy days we have had lately.

Hi Henry - yes, those were the plans all along and the reason I got dairy goats. Now, I've never actually tasted goat milk but I guess if I don't like it I can still make cheese or soap.

I love goats milk and would eat goat cheese 24/7 if I could

I can't wait to have goats. I really hope you like goat milk as long as their is no buck in with them I don't think it tastes "Goaty". She is beautiful and so are her babies are any of your other does bred?

Hasn't all the rain been horrible? The chicken coop's backyard/run is a soggy, rancid, wasteland that you don't dare walk in or you'll slip and slide and break a leg or something. We are using the front door to the coop and the chickens are now hanging out in our grassy yard instead of their mud hole of a yard. The ducks, however, seem to love it.

Goat cheese has a "tang" to it. Either you love it or you don't.

Goat milk, if not properly handled, can also have the 'tang'. If the milk tastes goaty it is because it isn't being handled properly. Cooled down ASAP. Extremely clean stainless steel or glass utensils and proper dairy cleansers to remove the milk proteins left behind that make the fresh milk go bad.

No Henry, I've not bred any of the others. I wanted to start with Confetti because she was two years old and had never been bred when I bought her. Goldie and Gazelle were only four months old and Bitsy was 5 months old. Bella was a year and a half and had already had one kid.

But that was all 6 months ago - how time flies. So some could be bred at this point but until I get these babies raised, I'm not ready to take this on again anytime soon. It's not easy wrestling a semi-wild goat and holding her so a baby can nurse or milking her when she doesn't want any part of it.

You probably only need one doe milking at a time for your dairy needs any way. Maybe breed her so she will be in milk when confetti dries up.

Boy that's the understatement of the year. I honestly don't know how stores sell goats milk. IMO it's the most awful stuff. I can't even choke it down. Years ago I used to tell people how awful goats milk was because I'd only tasted store bought. Then, I was at a farm that had milk goats and she offered us some fresh goats milk. I actually didn't want to taste it but I figured... give it a try! OH WOW! I was shocked at the rich, creamy, wonderful taste. I knew that day that I was going to have milk goats of my own... that was probably 12 or 13 yrs. ago.

I love watching the face on people when they try my goats milk. Thus far, everyone has loved it except one person who thought it was just ok.

MissPrissy is right on though... the taste of your milk is directly associated with cleanliness of equipment, how quickly you get the milk strained and really cold and what your goats eat. Having a buck near your does will also affect the milk taste.
