NJ - Sussex County Poultry Fanciers Annual Spring Show!!

Just my really nice big partridge cochin. I swear, she has a mike in my house so that she can hear if I'm planning to show her, so that she can plan her blow-outs! #@$%!

Everyone else - please God!please! - looks good. Of course, I've just jinxed myself.

I feel your pain! I'm counting the days until the show, so I can be re-assured that I'll actually be bringing a bird. Putting quite alot more BOSS in the feed...I'm getting so nervous! One day they look great, the next, feathers just drop!

One of my hens decided to take a bite out of my rooster last week. I just about flipped!

I have four! of the birds I'm bringing go rabid broody on me - and of course, stop eating.

Got three of them cured. My JG is hanging on still. I put alot of extra protein in their food starting 2-3 months before the show, like a few bags of 20-26% feed, and give them extra treats. Added wheat germ oil to their food, and some kelp powder. Don't ask me if it works - it makes ME feel better, anyway. Feels like I'm doing something healthy for them.

At least you got your hands on some nice feed. You're lucky to be in a position where you can say, "I've done all I could, now I just wait". Our TSC stopped selling gamefowl feed a year ago and that's where we do our major shopping. The stuff was excellent but people stopped buying because of the price...even if I found more near us, I could not convince my parents to get it...."Layer pellets are JUST FINE!".......This is why I do the showing...

I know best.

Also heeding the mighty call of spring...Silkie girl went broody 3 weeks ago. Lost all hope. She growled and bit and screamed when disturbed. Yesterday I saw her roaming around with the rooster like they were old friends.

I'm only counting on my roo from now on...

Red Barn in Middletown has gamebird feed for $12.99 per bag, also, TSC carries Flockraiser

Middletown, NJ??? Never heard of it. And the closest TSC to me is just under an hour. I did just find out that the Purina people do carry it - they just call it meat-builder. They don't even know why, when it says flock raiser on the bag! So, that means, when I've called before, and they said they didn't have it, they really did, I just wasn't calling it by the store's nickname for it!

So, I have my higher protein in a nearby source. But, the girls hate me because they like their 16% from Southern States that I have to drive 30 minutes to get. Well, they can have that for the summer.

Really? Next time we pass buy I'll be having a look! (Much better than the 21$ per bag that TSC used to sell). What exactly is flockraiser, anyway? Thank you for the info!

Also wanted to share that my only show Silkie hen has started molting in again (her whole beard fell out this winter due to minerals in the water) and I'M SO HAPPY.

I don't think she'll be ready for Sussex but I'm so releived. While others curse the molt, I cannot be more happy to see it. Winter does a number on my birds. I will never understand how anyone keeps them in condition?

You have to ask at the counter for the 'wild game' feed, it's a 50# bag in pellets made by Cochecton Mills - they keep it in the back. Not sure how far you are from Bullville, but Heritage Feed also carries Nutrena, and Agway in Pine Bush, too. Flockraiser is the same as Gamebird, I think, the protein is higher than layer feed. I give it to all my birds since they are all different ages, then just oyster shell on the side.
Red Barn also carries, rabbit feed by Cochecton Mills, it's cheaper and FRESHER than the stuff at TSC - I found bugs in Purina feed from them a few weeks ago.............

Good to hear! I know we're pretty close to the Red Barn, not so much to the Heritage Feed, nor that Agway. I'll take a look at the flockraiser...not having to switch feed stores would be awesome. Dumor is a nice pellet brand but the stuff just ain't doin' it for us.
