No chicken dinner for you, #@%&! Hawk

If/when you get bird netting, be sure it's not mist netting. Mist netting is designed to catch birds, for scientists, and is meant to be invisible to the birds so they'll fly into it and get tangled. You want a visible netting, like the picture above, so the hawks don't accidentally fly into it and get stuck. In addition to being a very big pain to untangle any bird (but especially hawks) from a mist net, it's illegal to catch them like that. And yet, mist nets are sold to keep birds out!
In short, be sure it's the thick, visible net that looks like it's made of strings, not the stuff that looks like it's made of thread or very long hairs.

Don't think bird netting is going to work in my yard, given my ginormous tree. But thanks for the suggestion. For now, I'll sit out there with them and watch for hawks. I will do this nightly, indefinitely if necessary.

Hey I built my coop under large hickory trees to protect from the heat. I have a plan how I am going to put the netting up and I will post it

It should be fairly easy and will require only scissors and a few small zip ties. My run is large and the netting was dirt cheap. Stay tuned perhaps after seeing photos how we navigated the trees you can make it work.
