Some hens just don't do the egg song.
None of my three do. I figure this is the reason.

Very interesting article by Shadrach.

A couple have made similar egg song noises when spooked or startled, but it’s completely unrelated to laying.

One night my husband heard a racket in the run. I ran down to investigate, and they were all "singing the song." And acting terrified, and looking at a spot in the nearby brush. I think it was a raccoon. The cockerel was very attentive too.

It’s been a while since I’ve read that article, I’m gonna give it another read, thanks!

When my girls were younger - they weren’t as proud about laying eggs. I think they are just getting used to everything.

My girls are getting close to 10 months now and won’t shut up when they lay. They even sing for others when they are done.

They have an alarm call that sounds similar to an egg song, so that's what you're hearing. That's why I still glance out the window if an egg song sounds "off," in case it's a predator call.
