No eggs and very jealous..

I live in Northern Missouri.

I found 1 egg in the coop about a month ago. Shoulda left it there but you know how it goes with 1st egg of the season. Then last week I found a big cluctch of almost 60. These I am trying hatching myself. Few days later I caught a pair making a new nest and now 3 of the hens at least are laying there. Maybe a 4th I accidently spooked this morning. She went back and layed her egg, hope they don't abandon that spot. Its close to the coops and the house. And I do NOT have to search forever for it.

Still have the 4 hens laying in same nest I been leaving eggs in. Also found my other hen went broody on a nest like i thought/hoped. Don't know how many in the nest and 1st time I've seen her since the 13th so I figure she had the nest before then. Hatching who knows when. I might hopefully be swimming in keets around the begining of next month. With 50 eggs still in bator, about 2 dz to set this weekend and however many she hatches. Not to mention the other 4 I am going to let hatch what they will. I would be content with about .... wow nevermind I just thought of how many keets I might end up having. Maybe I'll concentrate on my ducks, only 1 breeding pair LOL.

Yeah and NEVER a days peace. You know how much noise 8 guineas make when irratated. Multiply that by 12 and yep NO SLEEP ever. But I can most like sell alot of keet in my area EVERYONE wants them. Just need to decide on age and price to sell them. I could of got $10 each on a breeding trio a week ago, kinda glad I didn't since I getting eggs like mad now. Still 1 hen holding out or has her own nest somewhere. Figure she started her own. Just can't tell which pearlis which so following her won't work. I'll wait until I am short a hen again and see when she comes to eat solo stealth style.

Mowed some tall grass today by my broody hen because I didn't think her keets could make it to the feeding area once they hatch with the height of the grass I mowed. She never flinched and was within 6 feet of her. She's young but so far a good mama. Only saw her off the nest 1 time in 12 days. I will leave her a handful keets for all her hard work. Just hate thinking about last years successful hatches and then failed brood attempt by her mama and aunts. Ended like 5/32 made the last days of summer. So Imma adopt a whole lot of keets before to long, I hope. Shouldn't count my keets before they hatch though.

Quote: I have over 90 adults, 30some juveniles and 40 or so keets right now (again, lol)... believe me, I know all about Guinea noise, lol. You'll eventually get used to it, it becomes background noise after so many years of hearing it, lol. They do like to find the bedroom windows at about 6AM and go off about a leaf blowing by tho

Good plan with your keets. Keep us posted on what happens. Hope you find that nest too, before a predator does.

Well went outside check for preds saw 1 sneaking across barnyard and scared it off with a couple 22 shots. Mostly haven't had any issues with preds/birds this year. But still early. Got a coon 2 weeks ago but thats it other than some feral cats sneaking around.
Checked on broody Mama #1 and she still setting like a trooper. I say Mama #1 because I think one of my pearls is also setting now. She not in coop tonight and only 4 hens are laying in the nest I leave seeded. So I been thinking she has another nest sight, like my white. And tonight she was missing from coop. Doubt the pred got her he was just coming torward the coop 75 yds away when I chased it off. Although could have gotten her on a nest. Hope not.
And all going according to poultry math I set 30 more guinea eggs in bator tonight. The real reason I am doing this (Other than addiction) is that I have 4 people now wanting guineas. Not counting on a great hatch rate like last year roughly 80% with broody hens, nor counting on mamas being mamas. WIll be brooding almost all keets myself.
I know I can move the keets, I could sell eggs now. They are in more demand than chickens. Could be the prices these days from hatchery. If I end up with a motherload of them I can sell for cheap and still make out. If not I can still ask $3-$5 each and be justified asking that for day old to a couple weeks. Semi started birds I could prolly go $10 on easy. I already had an offer of that for a trio of adults. But wouldn't sell my breeders for under $15 each. Glad I didn't take the offer now. REALLY glad.

Poultry math could get REALLY interesting when I can start selling some keets.
