If you really want to get involved, here is a good place to learn just what NAIS is about. Be sure and read all the links, then, if you feel strongly enough to do something about it, start contacting your politicians. If you search back far enough, you'll find where NAIS has been discussed here before, and it was a good discussion, too.

Before I joined this site I didn't know what the nais was. I was going to register to be able to show my chickens at fairs and sells eggs once I get a laying flock. If I register under the nc egg law would that register me to the nais?

I am pleased to see that others feel the same way as I do. I went to a party tonight, and believe it or not, these school teachers were not aware of what the NAIS was, was for etc. I had copied off the educational page and shared it. Wow, they all were up in arms and took the pamphlets so to share and educate themselves.
Like I said, I am not into a political issues, no sign waving, yet awareness is what is needed for those that may have missed it and those that live it.
I would love to hear from some of those folks that actually live in states that have adopted these laws.
Needless to say, don't allow anyone to take away your rights, do not give them up freely and be sure to read the fine print!
Thanks for your opinions- keep this subject going for educational purposes.

With the passage of the new farm bill NAIS is now fully funded but there is some confusion at the state level as to whom is supposed to participate. They are still planning on 2010 for full implimentation and I look for it to go mandatory at that time yet they are saying it will always be a voluntary program.

ATTN:

We have had many topics on this subject and they tend to degrade quickly into flames, insults, paranoia and other unsavory suggestions. Please exercise your utmost discretion in posting here, as all previous topics had to be locked due to flaming.

Among the BYC membership are government workers, farmers, extension staff, etc. and they should not have to deal with ridicule (even if my association) due to the NAIS 'debate'.

Criticizing the govt system of doing things is not akin to criticizing the individual people who work for the govt. My husband was one of them, having served about 25 years in the Air Force. I haven't seen any people ridiculed here and I think it can be discussed without that. NAIS should be of concern to everyone who owns chickens and every American, IMO.
