Oh, poor Norie! I hope she gets to come home today!

And Nettie - Kudos to you for loving your animals so much! I know people think I'm crazy when I spend $100 at the vet for a bird.

Poor delicate baby, it probably was the DE, it can be like tiny shards of glass (that's what it's like to the bugs, maybe to Norie's sensitive mucus membrane as well). It dries things out. A dry throat is horrible. I know from experience. Don't use any more DE around her. Some glycerin down her throat should help. I saw some at the walmart, in a bottle. It's a liquidy gel that lubricates the throat. That will help a lot. And yes, there is Veterinary Pet Insurance. Probably worth it for your ducks. It is kinda expensive though. Google "VPI" (the company) or Veterinary Pet Insurance. That's the main one I know of. Just don't tell them about past health problems your guys have had or they may not accept you. Good luck with Norie, I think she just needs some TLC, taking it easy & throat lubrication (Glycerin, Jello, pudding, yogurt, etc).

I need to do more research on oxine.... it sounds like something very useful, but I've only seen or heard tidbits of what it is or how to use it. Some make it sound like a wonder-product... I'm not even sure what it is, to tell the truth, lol.

According to the newest x-rays, the inflamation has appeared to have moved lower in her lungs. The vet thought this might have been what caused her coughing fits. She is still stable, in the same condition, still at the vet in the O2 chamber. They'll try weaning her off again tomorrow, and we'll keep our fingers crossed she'll be able to come home!

oh wanted to add- the glycerin is okay for them? I've never heard of this method, but it sounds like it might work when a duck loses it's voice. Ming Mei lost her voice and had a scratching throat just a few weeks ago, and that might be something to keep in mind. where in walmart would you find it?

I don't know what that stuff is, but I hope Norie will be able to be weaned soon! Can't imagine what that bill will be..... lol

Glycerin is in the Pharmacy (OTC). Just ask the Pharmacist what shelf, I forgot what shelf I saw it on. But it was on the bottom.

the DE was food grade...........correct? did they treat her with anitbiotic's or check for any diseases like infectinous bronchitis before charging you all this money? My chickens got that and had the same symptoms. we had 2 choices and chose to medicate (cost $8.85) sumlet........... but ours can now be carriers so that flock is a closed flock.

Kinda blown away by this story!!!! Sorry for your duck problems, hope she gets better

She is currently receiving two different antibiotics since they are unsure what the problem is... She is getting baytril orally and another one (starts with a t, can't remember the name) by injection.

The DE is food grade. I think with norie is has just been a bad combinations of things to make her sick...
-She seems to be a little runty, and has some issues with her growth. She is kind of funny looking in the face (lack of feathers around the eyes, extra long face, etc) Even her eye lids seemed pulled too far for her face for awhile.
-She had a respiratory infection when she was younger, around 3-4 months old, that she caught from Moxy.
-Her routine has been changed recently, and there had been extra excitement around our house with both Ming Mei and Victor celebrating birthdays
-We started using the DE about two weeks ago, though we've been using Sweet PDZ for months now.
-Their pen is increasingly hard to keep clean, and despite my best efforts to get someone to build me a new one, my efforts and been futile thus far.

We have set up a special pen just for her for when she comes home. It's about 3x5 and it's in the empty room where the new duck pen is to be built once I find someone to make it for me. She will live in this new pen for about a week or so after coming home, in quarantine, in case she is contagious.

Update on Norie- She MIGHT come home today. I just talked to the vet (While writing this) and she thinks that Norie might be ready to come home tonight!!! She wants us to come in this evening and play with norie for a bit to see how she deals with the excitement and stress of us visiting. If she does well and doesn't have any fits, she can come home. If her breathing becomes too labored again, she will have to stay another night in O2. She currently has been weaned off the O2 and is doing well, with only sporadic moments of open mouth breathing/wheezy. They think these little moments are her trying to get out the thick mucus that is in her lungs. As long as she doesn't need the O2, she can come home! (She'll be in quarantine and oral meds for at least a week, if not more)

Fingers crossed!!!!
