Tonight I go without sleep, and I'm so bored! Thank goodness for my phone! I'm at the hospital and these doctors are taking forever to run tests and xrays! O and the nurse had to try 5 times to get the IV in me, OWW! I usually don't mind needles but that doesn't mean I want to be stabbed repeatedly. And why do I need an IV for broken bones anyways?! O maybe I should tell yall what happened…might make me sound less like a bumbling idiot :D so I have an old tree house, high up in a huge tree, and just above it is an old hollow, that a very cranky racoon has made a nest in. Yesterday I set a live trap, and at about 10pm today we caught her(she's pregnant) I let her calm down before attempting to climb up and move the cage. Well at about 11:30pm I went up to get her, to put her in the car and drive her down to the lake to let her go, I got up on the tree house platform and a board snapped, I caught myself and went to stand back up and the support beam snapped and me and half the platform fell about 20ft. So here I lay in the ER with possible, a broken collarbone, broken ribs and a concussion. Bluh! O well could be worse.

When you can't sleep youy mind has a tendency to roam. Right now I have been thinking about recent losses in my flocks.

June was miserable. I lost 5 birds in that month.
1. 2 month old EE pullet suddenly stopped wanting to do anything but sleep. After trying to treat for a few things that could be wrong she never got any better. We put her down and did a necropsy. She had a bad heart. About 1/3 normal size for that age and one side was hard. Seems she had a birth defect that finally caught up to her.
2. 1 year old bantam hen died from internal injuries. If I knew for sure which of the birds, most likely a roo, did it I would have another to add to the list.
3. Earnesting, 4 year old barred rock, fell over dead. I had threatened her for picking on the broody bantams no more then an hour before. She was laying under a bush, like she had just laid down to take a nap. I think she was my one and only heat loss.
4. 2.5 month old Comet pullet got into something toxic. Not sure, but I think she pecked a Castor Bean plant. Her body shut down in a hurry and we had no way to save her.
5. Sassy, last 6.5 year old standard buff cochin hen, fell off the roost and shattered her pelvis. No way for this to heal right, so we euthanized the poor old gal. Her roost was only 2 feet off the ground. She hasn't went up or gotten down on her own in years. Every evening I would set her up and first thing in the morning I would carry her out. At first this was done after her bumble foot surgery in 2010, but even after she healed she refused to do it herself. She would stay on the roost all day instead of getting down herself. In the evenings she would wait outside the henhouse till someone was there, then she would head on in and wait to be sat up while singing her head off. I think she enjoyed being waited on. Her 2 sisters were the same way, but we lost Fit last year and Hissy a few months ago. Buffit, Hissy's daughter, tends to herself, but loves her treats.

This month I have lost 1. Miss Blue, bantam cochin, had to be euthanized last Monday. She was only 6.5 years old, but her little body was shutting down. When I noticed her acting 'off' several weeks ago she had already lost most of her body weight and was not as active as normal. I tried worming hoping that was it, but I knew what it was. She was shutting down and there was nothing we could do. We watched and made sure she was having a decent life and she enjoyed the extra treats. Once she took that final turn towards the end and her quality of life was no longer good, we sent her on her way. She bled 5 drops of blood. That was all she had left.

I have pictures of all of these birds. I don't know if I have a picture of Miss Blue where she is alone. Most pictures have a her with a group of chicks. She raised 21 chicks in 4 different broods in 2007, 2008, 2009, and 2010. She was one of my most dependable mothers.
