OH! I forgot to mention!! I got TWO eggs yesterday! WooHoo! I think I'll take the rest of the store eggs and bake something to take to work!

Morning from Hickory, NC!
My 6 chicks are about a week old now and already seeing wing and tail feathers coming in. Love to watch them lay contently on the floor of the brooder - all sprawled out, feet tucked underneath and necks extended face down.
Have a great day everyone!

Hi everybody,

I'm from Shelby, NC, and have eight hens and one very friendly Langshan rooster. I wanted to let all of you know about a free heritage poultry swap that will be going on March 9th in Western NC. Here's a link to the thread on it in the chickenswap forum: https://www.backyardchickens.com/t/744052/heritage-poultry-swap-western-nc-march-9th

If you want to bring birds, just pm and I can get you the contact info

Good late morning everyone!! Hope everyone is having a good day!!

No chicken news to report...we're just waiting until spring when we will FINALLY get those things called "eggs"!! LOL

DH and I are spending V-day on Friday as a friend is coming by to watch the girls for us to sneak in a late lunch and do some much needed car shopping (ugh). Should be interesting to see what we find!!

NO Beth, we are NOT looking for a 12 passenger van either!! LOL

Researching & looking at purchasing some Freedom Rangers...getting rather excited about that...it will be our FIRST ever order!! WOO HOO!! Probably won't order until late March (then I can pretend they are a present for DD2) - mainly because the juvies will be moved out of their pen and into the bigger pen!!

Have a great day everyone!!

I have always used cheap hygrometers but I am tired of the hassle. Today I broke down and ordered one of the digital thermometer/hygrometers from Incubator Warehouse. I checked their Facebook page for coupon codes, and if you enter FACEBOOK1 as a promo code with ANY purchase (even my cheap $14.99 hygrometer purchase) they include an egg candler. It increased the shipping by $1.99. The value of the egg candler was $9.99.

Of course I just ordered an egg candler two days ago, grrr, maybe I can return it.

Just for fun:

What do you think? Rooster or Pullet?? Last week I would have SWORN it was a pullet...this week, I'm saying rooster...your take?? (She/he is partly or fully orpington - not sure who the mama is, but I can guarantee the papa was my old rooster Jeremy)

My Handsome Cadbury and one of his ladies: Reeces Cream!!

My Handsome rooster who is the SAME age as the rooster/pullet in the first photo (the buff)!! Gotta LOVE a blue sex link (thanks Alex)

BIG DADDY (aka Tyrone, thanks again Alex!!) and the girls out for their FIRST stroll (please ignore the duck pond - aka kiddie pool...this is the thing that leaks that we're trying to figure out where)

Just couldn't resist sharing a bit of my flock with you all...

That little gold colored bird on the top looks like she may be a he. The longer thinner feather at the tail??? Check the hackle and saddle feathers for thinner, pointier even feather.
..... but pretty Cockerel! at least from this pic.

I am so sad to say that 2 of my little mille fleur d'uccle died. They were 6 days old today. One died last night and one this morning. I am not sure what could have happened., They have food, water, heat and a clean floor - I change their paper a lot. I tried giving them some electrolytes with an eye dropper and also some water from off some soaked food but it didn't seem to help. I did notice that the one had pooped - I thought maybe they were blocked somehow.....

I have never lost babies after a hatch like that - I didn't see anything abnormal about them until they were just listless. I separated them so they wouldn't be knocked around by the others and tried the electrolytes, etc but it didn't work. The other 4 seem very vigorous and are eating and drinking all the time....well, between sleeping.

Any ideas?

Very sadly,
Angela

They aren't staying away from the lamp, and the thermometer doesn't even read 90 (and it's hanging right under the light)
