North Carolina

Yes it was crazy windy at my house also, I did get in the dirt a bit on Tues morning before the rain started, got 2 more rosebushes in the ground and a new bed dug up completely. I bought veggie and herb seeds to start at the grocery store today, cant wait to have my garden back. NEED SPRING! like now, so tired of cold and wet weather.
I second that! The only downside to the whole Day Light Savings Time ending...or beginning....whatever it's doing. My DD already gets up at 5:30, I really don't want her waking up ANY earlier; however, I will suffer the early mornings IF (a big IF) that means my girls will FINALLY start laying for me.

I have my seeds purchased (ordered through Baker Creek) and I am just itching to put them in the ground. I didn't order much as we're going to start out "small" this year to see how they do with the new soil. Our plans: Peas, Beans, Corn, Peppers (hot, HOT and sweet), Tomatoes (for salsa & BLT...mmmmm - or in my case a mozzerella & tomato & basil...mmm) and a few melons/squash. I have more that I would like to plant, but since I am also pregnant and due this summer, there's only SO much I will be able to reasonably accomplish and DH is far too busy to tend to everything plus. IF it works out this year, we'll be adding on next year - our goal is to have a spot (already picked out) where we grow our own oats and wheat!! Good luck with your garden!!

We managed to survive (barely) through the wind with very little damage. Our OLD coop hidden in the woods fell down a little bit more - so DH has decided to tear it down and move it out - we will use it to "expand" our juvi pen and convert the juvi pen to a duck house!! Getting ready to order some freedom rangers too!! WOOT!!

Spring goes forward. What is 5:30 now will be 6:30. You're going to get an extra hour of sleep! Yay!

Good Morning, Happy Chicken People!

I'm already is Spring Break mindset, and having trouble getting going this morning. All the chores are done, though. Just gotta get myself off to work!
I have two hatches happening over break, so will have lots of chickies. And all the older birds have their big move this weekend. Yay! They go down the bigger chicken house that we almost lost in the fire. Most of them will go on the side that leads to the unburnt pasture, but the older girls that are currently laying will go on the other side for a bit. I want to worm the point-of-lay birds before they start laying. And the weird white rooster will go to freezer camp. I don't need a hawk-caller out there, so he's dog food. And I sure don't need his weird genetics, whatever they are.

Enjoy your day, everyone!

Good morning everyone :frow
While I am so tired of the cold and rain, I am happy for it because, several seasoned farmers have informed me that a wet winter brings a mild summer, and since it was already in the high 70's by this time last year. I'm hoping they are right. :fl while I love the extra hours of daylight, I don't like it when the temps sore into the high 90's.

Hope you all have a great day..... I'm off to school

How were your Ideal hatchery birds?

I think I am going to stay small when buying birds... I was not all that impressed with the ones I got about the same time as I think you did (first week of Nov.) There was such a higher mortality rate, than what I have when I hatch and raise myself. They don't all look the weight that I would expect at this age either. There were 57 in all, in our order, and I had friends pick up their portion of the order, and even the ones that I kept here had a higher mortality than I'm accustomed to. I though... I can't help how others care, so I should take that into account, but even with the ones I kept, ... I think it was much too high.

We are keeping them separate from the main flock still.

Does anyone have a list of diseases that Peafowl are susceptible to--from chickens? (just to be on the safe side)
These Peafowl need to be de-bugged, and all, but appear to be in good health. They are not used to being caged, and previous generations have nested in the open yard where I got them from, under a fence, and grasses. They are over 6 months and the one with the splitting headache is about a year. She is still doing well!

My Ideal birds...it varied. I've never had a problem with their birds before. Ever. And most of my hatchery layers have come from them. And I had no problems with the order from November, other than the foxes and dogs thinking they tasted good (not MY dogs!) But the order from January, well, I lost half of the Dark Brahmas. Now, I also have Buff Orps and some Leghorns in there, and they've done fine. But not the Brahmas.

I'm hoping that I'll be back to raising my own again soon, though. Shipping isn't the best thing for chicks, after all!

I made it to work. Class in 20 minutes! Just gotta get through today, and I'll be able to refresh my sanity!
