The raspberries I got from you are flowering and have a few berries on them! I think my strawberries are done, for now, I think they're too big for my hanging bag and need more room to grow. Zucchini, green and purple green beans, and peas, tomatoes, peppers and all the outside stuff is in full bloom!

Does anyone around me eat squirrel? I've been decreasing the population in my yard with my pellet gun and cleaning them but it's just more than I can eat alone.....everyone seems to be reluctant to eat them?!?!?!?!

That seems like a lot of work for a little bit of meat!
Ya'll are way more adventurous with the animals you eat down here!

Your garden sounds great! My zucchini looks like it's on steroids, it's taken over the whole garden and 3 feet tall. Too bad that's all I have, darn bunnies have devoured my other garden! The fence that deters my chickens doesn't seem to work on them. Knew I should have kept them in the hutch, now I can't catch them.

Anyone in need of 2 dwarf lionheads ;)

I have a question about pigeons...
I know this is a chicken forum, but you guys seem to know a lot about birds.
I keep seeing pigeons for sale everywhere, which is so weird to me.

What is the point of these, to grow your own squab?
I wouldn't imagine they laid eggs everyday like chickens, do they?
Wouldn't they just fly away? I guess you'd have to keep them in a little bird cage.
They don't seem like they would make good pets, so I was just curious why there are so many for sale.

Hello everyone! I hate that I can never seem to catch up on this thread, it's very active. I hope everyone had a safe, fun filled holiday weekend.
Sorry to all those having issues with your birds.

We had our first guineas hatch out, along with 9 pekin ducks (which I now need to get rid of), and some long awaited chicks. We're trying our hand at quail, so we'll see how this goes. I'm on the hunt for some turkey poults, blue, bourbon, and royals. Wish me luck with that. Hope everyone has a great rest of the week!
I know Bhep has royal palms and sweetgrass maybe a few bourbon turkey eggs cooking in a bator

Homers come back home and people race them. The others like rollers or tumblers do just what their name says while flying in air, they have competitions for that as well. Alot of others are for looks, and people show them. They don't lay eggs like a chicken. Coopscoop as a few and could tell you more if you need, but you can make a pet of them.

Wow, thanks for the info!
I was just surprised seeing all of them for sale.
I've never heard of pigeon competitions, that's pretty cool!
I know some people eat squab (pigeons), but there can't be much meat on them.
I like idea of them being pets and competitive acrobats much better :)

There's actually more meat than you'd think. I just have too many squirrels coming in and digging my potted plants and in my gardens. We have a few tenn. redbacks loose in the yard, but they know if they get in the gardens they're gonna be for dinner. My zucchini is also gigantic compared to everything else in the garden.

I talked to her Sunday at WCA. I'm not in a big hurry, just as long as I get them before it gets chilly, so I got a bit.

Bhep, you will have to let me know if my tip about the water pays off for you. I'm curious to see if your result is the same as mine was.

A squab is about a pound before dressing, and has good meat:bone ratio, so has a good amount of meat on it. A lot of people free flight their pigeons, too. It's much cheaper if they can do some foraging. (Higher disease risk, though. they can bring stuff back to your chickens.) Once you've gotten them started nesting where you want them, they'll mostly hang around. They know where the food is! If you've ever fed city pigeons regularly, you know you'll end up with them on your head, in your lap, and in your way. You can easily make a pet out of a pigeon. Plus all the competitions. And show birds. I know next to nothing about shows and competition. Those are on the large list of Things I Am Ignorant About.

rbacker.... questions:

Are the ones that have it carriers for life?

If you vaccinate...they can NOT get it at all?

This is a contact disease...not airborn?

The ones that have been sick.....can they get vaccinated?
1. Yes they are carriers for life and can shed it again (without showing signs of any illness) if they come under any kind of stress such as transport etc.
2. If you vaccinate with the recombinant vaccine (I have been told to contact Dr. Mason at the state vet in Raleigh for this), they will be safe for life.
3. This is spread through bodily fluids so they have to come into contact with wet manure or mucous. The virus dies as soon as it dries out.
4. Sick birds can be vaccinated and it will help them get over it somewhat, but they can still sometimes shed virus when stressed.
If I am not adding any birds to my mini flock of 8 - do I need to be concerned about these diseases?

Should I vaccinate regardless of any symptoms?
1. I did have not added any new birds to my flock since December, so I don't know where we got it from. It can be transmitted by songbirds and ducks and turkeys, even though these birds won't get sick from it. If your postal carrier drives into someones yard who owns birds shedding ILT and gets poop on her tires and then drives down your driveway while the poop is still wet, then your birds peck at said poop, they can get it.
Help I have a hen with drainage from the beak (clear like a runny nose). And bright green discharge from her vent. Was hanging out in a nesting box all day. Ugh.
I might suggest that you send her body to the state vet or take her to your local vet to be sent for necropsy, at the very least, have a local small animal vet do a fecal.
My last barred rock I've yet to bring myself to be able to cull after my culling of her sister went terribly wrong.
I was giving tylan injections, and while her face isn't swollen and got some color back, she still has a runny nose and stinky face.

Anyway, it was about 3 days ago she got her last Tylan injection and I had to do it in her thigh since I couldn't get a good shot at her breast (all I could feel was ribs and crop, I thought I would make it worse so went for next largest muscle). As soon as I gave it to her she started hopping on one foot. It's been 3 days and she still is hopping on the one foot. I've read that Tylan and other injections can cause paralysis. Does anyone know if this is temporary or what I can do to help it? I've been googling stuff and searching on here, and I can't find anything.

Thanks guys, hope everyone has a good day!
Doesn't swollen face suggest dry pox? You should take her to a vet.

Wow Toto, we definitely aren't in NY anymore. Do people actually EAT squirrel? I thought you could only do that if you were wearing a coon skin hat and holding a cane pole.

No offense, but I have to nugle you southern country people. Wish we lived closer, my husband would probably love some. Congrats on the new baby, makes me wish for another (until my son wakes up).
