North Carolina

The history and spirit of the holiday has been explained to them and yet they
feel they need to "enlighten" all the younger children that there is no Santa.......
it's all the adults bringing the gifts. We have tried to explain that although it is
the adults doing the gifts it is because the spirit of giving and doing for others.
It's like beating my head on a wall soooooo...........don't want to believe in the
good and spirit of giving then you don't need to receive any giving of others......
and DON'T ruin it for others. If we were still in Michigan I'd get them some coal
from the docks.
We have some coal in our yard... need some? I am going to BHep's tomorrow and can leave it with her.

My 7 year old is starting to have doubts and voice his logical explanations, but I'm trying to get him through believing next Christmas since I don't get to have him this year. I want one more big one! He'll be in 3rd grade next year so we will see...

Only got 2 turkeys processed, but got 28lbs of ground meat off of them. I am sure some unfortunately went to waste cutting the meat off the bones raw, but DH did the best he could. Three more out there that will be done when we get back from Maryland. Heading up there tomorrow. My mom said some warm air came through and melted all the snow they got. Supposed to be almost 80 down here on Sunday.

Sadly, my lav orp rooster Bruce started crowing this morning. So if I can't sell him and his girl this week he will have to head to freezer camp (he's too pretty to eat too!)
RF- Love the Sumatra! I wish the girls would get the real long tails like the roo, they're so pretty, but no boys for us!

Hope everyone has a great weekend!

My son is OBSESSED with trains (like he can spend hours watching documentaries on them!) so one year when we threatened him with coal he got so excited. "You mean real coal??! Like they use on trains??? Santa actually brings that to kids!!!" haha that's all he wanted for Christmas that year!

Hello! My RIR finally started laying! She is laying very large brown eggs! It just took her 35 weeks?!?! Better late than never!
I have a question. I have a BCM that just started laying a few weeks ago. All of her eggs have had black speckles in the whites of the egg. From my googling, I believe they are "meat spots." Does anyone have any experience with this or wisdom to pass on to me? Will she always have these spots in her eggs or will they clear up?

You can salvage the rest of the meat by cooking down the carcasses for broth and soup meat. No loss!

Ooh! I just saw that the Mother Earth News Fair is going to be in Asheville in April!

Thanks! I was hoping it would fall during spring break, but that's not happening. I'll have to think about it. I'd only be able to do a one day, with a five hour drive on each end. Well, guess I could spend the night, but hubby and I can't both be gone overnight. And it's not as much fun without us both.

Such a dilemma! Must sort this one out. At least there's lots of time.

Upgraded the nursery today! Brooder caps and sand floor! Next is to convert an old shed to a coop and a grow out pen!! Come on Spring!
